Cam selection help.

Hello. I am building my first stroker. Motor blew up on my 2000 grand cherokee a while ago and am just now getting at it again. I got a 2002 block. Gonna be bored 30 over. 8 wheight crank. Gonna use 258 rods, 4.0 pistons 2000 head. I use this as my daily driver and have no idea how to figure what cam to use. I do some mild off roading but mainly road driven. I want to try to use 87 octane if I can. Any info or help would be great. Lots of good info on here. Thanks to everyone already for that.

what year did you find your crank from?? i dont think its an 8 cwt, either a 4 or a 12. if all you want is a cheap stroker, you could use the 4.5 recipe and maybe even get away with a stock cam

Adam, a 4.5L version of my "poor man's" stroker would be OK provided that the cylinder bores are in perfect condition and don't need to be rebored. How did you blow your engine?

My bad. it is a 12 weight. The block I have needs to be overboard because of damage. 30 over will get it back in line. I want to put in a cam that will be good so I dont have to go back and do it later. I dont have a good stock cam anyways. The engine blew because my ex wife rolled the jeep on its lid one winter and it ran for 5 minutes upsidown. I got 35000 more miles before the cam broke in 3 peices and took out the number 6 rod. Holes in block after that. I am gonna have the block work done and the crank ground and polished. port the head myself. Thanks for the info.

i see why shes your ex :lol: just kidding sucks about the whole thing. check the FAQs theres alot of info there about how to pick a cam, and two links on the top of that page that will give you an idea of what all cams are available. so far the comp 68-232-4 and 68-231-4 are popular, and a few others, like a lunati (forget the part number)

Great info. Thanks guys. How about any ideas on valve springs, rockers and lifters. Should I use stock or are there better ones I should use. Thanks again.

If you're going to use the stock cam then those can be stock as well.

search for valve springs, theres been LOTS of things used from stock 4.0s, mopar performance 4.0 ones, SBC springs, ford I6 springs, and im sure the list goes on. just depends on how deep your pockets are.
