Crate Stroker Suggestions?

Post by CodeRed30 »

I just blew the tired Renix 4.0 in my XJ and figured it'd be a good time to just upgrade to a mild stroker. However these are my questions-

1. What is a reputable crate motor builder for Jeep strokers?

2. Should I be looking to change to the H.O. heads/cam/intake mani or stay with the Renix? And if I should make the H.O. switch, what needs to be done to make the Renix stuff work with it?

3. I'm not looking for crazy power, just reliability and a bit more power. Therefore, should I be looking at a 4.5, a 4.7, or a 4.9?

Thanks in advance for any insight you guys can give!

1. Hesco are the best but also the most expensive, followed by Golen. Avoid Titan.

2. Depends on which state you live in. If it's CA, just buy a stroker short block and bolt your Renix head plus other hardware onto it. If you make the HO switch you'll need the HO intake manifold (preferably '99+) with TB and injector rail, HO header, '91-'95 HO fuel lines, and Ford 24lb injectors. You'll also need to modify the Renix TPS to fit on the HO TB.

3. Go for a 4.6. The cylinders will have been bored +0.030" so they'll be straight and true, and there'll be enough meat left in the cylinder walls for a second rebore should it become necessary.

Sorry, should've thrown that in the first post.

Budget- Under $3k for the longblock

Intended use- 80% street // 20% Offroading MAYBE a tow once in a great while. Maybe...

Mechanical level- I'm fairly confident in my abilities, and have some solid experience under my belt. However, I wouldn't be savvy to building a stroker from scratch, hence the crate motor.

Cheromaniac- Is the HO swap worth the extra work? Also what model heads should I be looking for? I've heard some are better than others, for both the Renix and the HO

Hesco, Golen, and ATK are both good. Hesco is probably the best but you need a thick wallet with them.

Where are you located? What are your state's emission regulations? Converting to HO would eliminate the EGR so you might want to check if it'll be legal.

I'm fortunate enough that I don't have any emissions testing where I live.

Then get a '91-'95 HO head, port it, add the other parts that I mentioned, and enjoy the extra power. :D

Sounds good, but what else will I need? I'm sure the Renix intake mani and TB won't work, right? What about all the Renix sensors and wiring connectors?

Read item 2. from my first post. It's not difficult to modify the Renix TPS to fit the HO TB but if you're not confident doing it, Hesco have an adapter.

Yeah, I don't think anyone could accuse Hesco of selling anything too cheap, especially their TPS adapter at an eye-watering $145.
