oil pump kit?

Post by 4.whoa »

Has anyone ever rebuilt their oil pump with one of the gear kits? debating that vs a new pump. it's less then 1/2 price of new pump, which is nice but ...............?

They work fine if the only issue you have is wear on the gears... However, if there is any wear on the housing itself you will still be out of spec there and have potential oil pressure issues, and you still want to replace the pickup tube anyways, especially if you pull it out of the pump housing. My preferred method is just put in a new pump and pickup and call it cheap insurance. The oil pump is the heart of the engine and the last thing you want to do is build a new engine and then have issues because of a $20-30 difference on the oil pump.

Interesting modification.. only thing I don't like is the unfiltered oil going to the gear.

About 90% of the oil the engine see's is unfiltered, the filter doesn't have the capability to filter all of the oil, especialy the cold oil on start up, if you blocked the bypass valve it would blow the filter right off of the engine, I've seen the MESS! it makes first hand.
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

50 years ago that would be true. We use a full flow filtration system not a bypass system. The only times unfiltered oil goes to the engine is during cold start up, high acceleration, and in the event the filter is clogged. Conditions that would open the bypass valve in the filter. Other than that the bypass will be closed.
