headbolts

I will be putting the head on my 96 4.6 tomorrow hopefully. I have the Felpro headbolt set. 7 of them are long with threaded studs on top of the bolthead...I know where these all go. On the other side...5 are short with nothing at the top, just plain 12 point bolt heads. 2 more are short (same length) with inch long strait 1/4 dia posts on the heads, no threads. Does any one have a picture to show where these 2 different ones go...thanks

hi, if i remember correctly the ones that have the studs on the top go on the intake side of the motor the plain ones end up on the other side and the two with the non threaded studs match up to the valve cover gasket to keep it in postition. you will also need the special sealant on the front bolt drivers side (one closest to the thermostat housing) it is loctite 592 or equivalent. You should buy a haynes manual at the local parts store so you can get the proper torque sequence . I know you have to run thru them 2 times to get final torque.

The one with the threads go on the intake side, right if looking from the front. The two with the non threaded studs go in one from the front and on in from the rear. Do you have a manual with the torque specs and sequence? You know to seal up #11 as it goes in tot he water jacket?

Thank you rammit and silver xj...I laid the valve cover gasket down and found out the two places for the ones with the posts. I have a 97 fsm that shows me the torque sequence and I just picked up a tube of loctite 592 for the #11 bolt thru the water jacket. I have my can of copper gasket spray for my solid gold headgasket( see my other post) and I just threw a 12 pack of yuenglings in the fridge for moral support and fortitude. I would feel better if I wasn't stuck using a copper headgasket but you have to pay for inexperience so hopefully it will all go well. I will post pictures soon

Solid dead soft copper headgasket? What's wrong with that? I prefer them!

Used plenty on performance engine buildups - particularly for forced induction - and haven't had any trouble.

I was told that for sealing the combustion chamber, they are topps. They said the problem arises when sealing the water jacket ports and holes. Since there are no seals on these openings in the copper you have to do it with the spray gasket and silicon. It appears less forgiving than the plain head gaskets. Since its my first time with copper, I'm hoping I do it right. Any helpful hints would be appreciated
