258 Head on 4.0

Post by machinedog »

New to site I am replacing a Pimped out 258 with a stroker 4.7. Question is will a 258 head work on a 4.0 block so I can spend more on the short block and get a few more years out of my 2.02/1.94 head with clifford & elddy 4?

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure even ported/polished with a big cam and over sized valves, a 258 head flows so poorly you'd still do better to use even a stock 4.0 head.

Maybe this should be posted in the FAQ section. This has been discussed several times, and the conclusion has always been that the 4.0 head was much better. I believe the 258 intake can be installed on a 4.0 HO head by drilling new holes for the locating pins. You should be able to get a head pretty cheap, I really dont see a bigh cost impact here.

I don't think anybody would argue that the EFI will give you better performane and better gas mileage than a carb. You can get a wiring harness for the Jeep EFI for about $450.00, then a ECU and other parts form a donor or junk yard.

So we are back to the age old question , where is the money better spent?

sell your worked head and manifolds to a die hard 4.2 guy and use the money for 4.0 parts

I took your advice and found a 96 Ho head with spare block for future Scrambler build for $100. So its back to the bench & grinder's to clean up the new head for the 2.00 & 1.60! Good thing Iv had a lot of practices maybe it will be better this time
