I think about this alot... especially when its time to fill up my tank.
Here in Oregon, you dont pump your own gas... there have been many times that i have asked for midgrade and gotten regular.
With a stroker engine (which i havent yet built) most people wouldnt be able to deal with a mistake like that.
So my question is this. If you asked for say premium and got regular because the guy who pumped your gas was not paying attention or in too much of a hurry ... what would you do? Make the station pay for your tank? Can they pump it out? Have them pay for some octane booster like 104+?
What would you do?

Same thing in NJ. While I don't live there my parents and grand parents do and there is a car show in New Hope we go to yearly. They don't allow you to pump your own gas there either.. stupid law. A few times I had some bone head put regular when I said premium. There is a reason the car requires premium, and I don't care if it has knock sensors to dial back the timing or not. Usually, when I ask for premium it isn't because I want to spend more money, but because the vehicle requires it. I let the manager on duty know about it. If the idiot can't understand English he shouldn't have that job in the first place. The times that this has happened I had a free tank of gas and 2 bottles of whatever octane booster they have. I'm not paying for something I didn't ask for, they aren't the government. And if they still wanted me to pay I would, then call the credit card company while sitting at the pump. There have also been times where I just didn't like what was coming toward me and just filled it myself. That pump also makes a nice weapon on the body work.

Make the station pay for your tank?
-Good luck. I havent met a reasonable individual that works at a station.
Can they pump it out?
-Most late-model vehicles have a anti-siphoning gizmo in the filler neck to prevent fuel theft, so short of pulling a tank, you are SOL.
Have them pay for some octane booster like 104+?
-While this may be a cheap and logically simple option, chances are you wont notice theyve just put regular in till your tank is full....so the chances of a thoroughly/properly mixed emulsion would be slim to none...for atleast the first few miles.

That is when you swerve side to side like Nascar... yeah.. try explaining that one to the cop "Honestly.. I was trying to mix the gas in my tank"...so the chances of a thoroughly/properly mixed emulsion would be slim to none...for atleast the first few miles.

+1 on the pump scratches and gas paint wipes. an old girlfriends father, he used to pump, even at the full serves. all the pump jockeys new him by name, and the amc javelin rollin up kinda helped too, not too often you see one of those around here.

My sister bought a new Saleen Mustang R something or other (don't keep track of it, don't like it). She has had it a little over a year and there are already two scratches where the gas cap is. She is also in NJ.
