Ok quick question...what all do I need to do to put 4:56 or4:10 gears in my XJ...has D30 and the rear axel I was told was out of a 2000 XJ so it is still Chrysler 8.25. DO i need new carriers and what not?

You should not need a new carrier for your 8.25. They come with carriers designed to take gears 2.56 & up. As for your Dana 30, it depends on what gears you have now. The break is at 3.54 so if you have anything lower like 3.07s or 3.54's, yes you will need a new carrier.

K thanks...I think thats where i'm having 4x4 issues lol...the when i bought it i had issues with it..so I called the guy and he said the rearend was out of a 2000 xj. and I'm assuming the dana 30 is stock so it's still got 3.07s and the 2000 rearend has 3.55s Any suggestions on where i could get a decent price for 4:56 for them?

Yours is a manual? I believe you have to get a bigger carrier for the 30 if you go 3.73 and above. Make sure the rear axle is indeed a chryco 8.25 and not the dana 35(that came in all XJs w/ abs, even if they didn't adapt yours for abs when they put it in). As you know manual 4.0s usually came w/ 3.07 gears and the autos came w/ 3.55s, so you could(did) cause havoc in the transfer case if you try to engage 4WD.

Yes mine is a 1996 XJ Sport 4.0l 5 Speed...I don't have abs but I will have to get under it and take a look. I figured somethin was going on when I tried it...The previous owner used it as a bogger/Trail rig...I got it for 1200 bucks so I started doin some remods to get it to a DD. When I had looked at it I tried the 4x4 but I was pretty much in a field and didn't ssem to have a problem (Jeep newbie) With winter here I hit some nasty roads so I engaged the 4x4 and it started pulling left and right and damn near stalled out...if thats the diff gear ratios then I know what I gotta get done...if there could be somethin else up let me know...all the ujoints and whee joints are brand new. But my plan is the regear it to 4:56 with my 4.5 stroker when its done neways.

So this will be your daily driver? What size tires are you going to be running with that 5 speed? I run 31's with my 4.0 5spd and have 3.73's. It is a nice combo between power/economy. With 4.56's I assume you will be running around 33+ tires?
