hey guys im looking for a new bolt rifle. i need something that wont break the bank but will be accurate with sub minute of angle. im looking at the remington 700BDL, savage 16, tikka T3, etc. i would also like it to be in .308 or similar. needs to be a real tack driver. this rifle will see limited hunting but mostly punching paper.

any shooters around here?

im leaning toward the savage model 16 weather warrior in .308. it has a composite black stock and stainless barrel with accu-trigger.

no shooters around here? surprising.

For accurate and cheap, it's tough to beat a Savage. Back when I was in the biz we had a heavy bbl. 308 Savage that we used to play with once in a while. With a decent scope I could consistanly hit those orange exploding targets (1" bullseye, IIRC) off the bench at 200 yards.

have you had any experience with the 7mm-08 cartridge? if so, like it compared to the .308?

i think im sold on savage. i hear and read nothing but great stuff about them.

i recently bought a remington model 770 in 30-06. way to much gun for a day of target shooting. my accuracy gets increasingly worse as the day goes on because im anticipating the consequences of pulling the trigger. im not too crazy about the action on this thing either. i will be using it as a trade in for my new savage when i decide what round i would like to fire.

I don't have much experience with the 7mm-08. We were heavily into Class III and military type firearms, so .308 was what we did. Keeping our '60 and G3 fed was a challenge ;-) We did play with a couple .300 Win Mag anti-sniper type rifles, though. If you really want to reach out, they work well--more expensive to load for, and tougher to find factory ammo for than the .308 or '06, if that is a concern.
