I am using a 1981-86 4 counterweights, 46lb, 64mm nose with a 95 block and I am wondering what flex plate , timing gear set and harmonic balancer should I use. Do I need to get ones from a 258 or can I use them from my 95 4.0. Thanks in advance.

You need the flex plate from your original year engine because that is what the cps is looking for. I think any timing set will fit.Get the set for your engine block model year. I used the Cloyes double roller but there are cheaper sets that will fit. The harmonic balancer must be from the newer jeeps because I think 258 balancers were not made for a serpentine belt. I plan on using the balancer that came on my 96 donor engine even though I am using the 70-s 12cw crank. The keyway for the crank gear is shown on the factory parts catalog as the keyway for the balancer but it is too small for the balancer but fits beautifully in the crank gear slot. I will be going to a speed shop to match up the keyway for my balancer.

What do you mean by the flex plate from my original year engine. Do you mean from the 258 crank year or the 95 4.0 block. Thanks

Use the flex plate from the vehicle it is going in. I.e. if it is going in a 95 Jeep Cherokee with the AW4, use the flex plate for that vehicle.

Sorry..I meant the engine that originally came with that vehicle. You stated that you were using a 95 block but I don't know what year jeep you actually have. I am using a 96 block in my 92 cherokee so I need the flexplate that goes with my stock 92 cps electronics even though my block is newer I have to match the electronics

If you are going to run a performance cam and/or higher rate valve springs buy a double roller timing chain. I learned the hard way
