To header or not to header....

Hey guys,
I've been slowly moving toward getting my stroker project buttoned up but I have a question about exhaust. I've been reading lately that most of the header manufacture's don't really do much development for low end power, they tend to just go for the most horsepower. So is it a good idea to put a header on a stroker that is build basically as a low end motor? I keep having flashbacks to the early 80's when I built a 350 chev and put a set of headers on in and it actually felt like it lost low end compared to the stock ram's horns manifolds. So am I nuts?
