i seem to remember someone running an electric oil pump, but i cant seem to find it. ive tried the search and even read through a couple builds. so my question is, is there an electric oil pump setup that will work good for these engines, and how would i go about plumbing it? i have a couple of ideas, but im not sure im on the right track for it.

Electric waterpumps have become popular over the last few years, but there is always a concerrn about reliability. If the water pump fails you overheat, if the oil pump fails you waste the motor. Some small pumps are available for remote turbo lubrication or gearbox lubrication, but i have not seen one designed to replace the oil pump in an engine.

One could be made, you could use a external pump from Moroso or Peterson and drive it from a DC motor. The pumps cost around $650.00 and a comercial DC motor would be about $200.00 . you would then have to make a coupling housing or some belt drive setup. You could weld a pickup into the oil pan and have a tube come out the side. You would use a Oil filter adapter designed for a remote oil filter kit to get the oil into the block.

You are thinking of the Preoilers that are out there. They are used to get pressure prior to starting, it was designed to keep from having dry bearings. Tim

My biggest question is WHY?

just an idea. im tryin to get the most life and reliability out of my engine, and i thought i read someone having one. but i see the problem about the engine overheating and possibly running dry. the part that made me think to look towards an electric was the "moved" drag on the engine. take the drag away from the camshaft, understandably moving it to the alternator instead. also, dry starts. i think ill end up scrapping the idea though.

Just keep in mind, that alternator efficiency varies around 30%. This means, that to pump the same amount of oil you would have to rob at least twice the power from the engine.
