hello everybody my name is trevor from prince george canada ....anyways i have a 88 cherokee the 4.0L is gettin tired .....now i have recently aquired another 4.0L complete engine was burning blue but ran good ...............
i want to do the cheapest build i can on it i mean cheappppppppp
ive heard i can take a 4.2 rod and crank and toss it in just like that
so any knowledge or info even ideas would be great

hmmm, i was gonna say i think youre kinda close to me. only 9 hours and change according to the all knowing google. anyway, you can do a stroker for relatively cheap, but theres a little more that will need to be done to it if youre hoping to run it on regular. some guys say reg is just fine but theyre closer to sea level than you are. just keep that in mind. as well, how mechanicly inclined are you? if you can assemble an engine, you should be able to cut down on machine shop costs. id recommend spending a couple days lookin through the FAQs, and check the stroker recipe site

yup roughly 7 hrs away
basically im not looking for anything fancy just cheap man cheap
now the question is can i just take 4.2 rods and they will go on piston no prob do i have to get it bored ?
same think with crank will it just go in ?
what year 4.2 shall i be lookin for?

Welcome to the sight!
Any year 4.2 from '72 on should work...only differences are the counter weights on the crank (and snout length which is minor). The rods will go onto the pistons, crank will pop in....
but if you just pop those in baddah bing baddah boom...have you really solved any of the 'blue burning' issues of the old engine? The cheaper you go now, the more it's gonna cost later.

well im pulling it apart replacing rings probally lifters valves ect just doing a basic rebuild with a little more i dont know what crank and rods will do horsey wise but meh doesnt hurt to try
most likely blowing blue is either rings or valves im not worried i just dont want to be in it for 2000 bucks just do a junk yard build
just got the quote on hot tanking and checking for cracks ect 80 for block 30 for head so next week ill be taking both those in clean the crap out of her
so now im looking for 4.2 crank and rods

oh yea, i forgot. Welcome!!
anyway, do a search for renix and see who all has done a build with renix computers and that should give you an idea how cheap you can get away with. as for boring, whether or not you need it will be dictated by your block, and how worn it is. the machinist who hot tanked it should be able to help you out with that.

The cheapest route would be to do almost an exact copy of my stroker build with:
+0.020" overbored 4.0 block
4.2 crank (check if journals need to be reground undersize)
4.2 rods
Speed Pro 677CP pistons STL-677CP020
New OEM oil pump
New timing set
Keep everything else inside the engine stock, keep all your stock ancillaries, add 24lb Ford Racing injectors, and build a MAP adjuster from $10 worth of Radio Shack parts by following the instructions in my write-up:

i'm following this thread as well since a low budget yet reliable stroker seems to be a very popular direction i'm leaning towards right now rather than a big gas V8. One big question i'm trying to figure out is can you re use the head bolts from the engines you salvage your parts from or are new bolts "a must" if so what are their part numbers and are there online sources?

usually new bolts are a must. think of it as cheap insurance or a job done right. also, on some engines, the head bolts are a torque to yeild, and you cant use them more than once.
