Distributor aux oiler

Hey Everybody!

I've been looking around the site and doing some research on a few guys adding additonal oiling kits to distributor gear in their strokers. What's the general thought on doing this? How many guys have had gear failures? I'm in the process of building a 4.6 and I'm in the spot where if I'm going to do it I need to but I'm wondering if it's really worth doing.

Thanks
Dean

If your going to run high spring pressure aka big cam, it will be money well spent!

If your running a stock or near stock cam, its not as important, it just one of those piece of mind things ;)

I'm running a Comp cams 68-231-4 with Mopar springs. Is that considered a big cam?

How does running a big cam and springs relate to the distributor gear? The cam shaft turns the oil pump and distributor, not the other way around. I wouldn't worry too much about secondary oiling of the cam gear unless you are running a HV oil pump or heavy weight oil. But it is always a good idea.

I feel it is a waste of time.

Not necessary if you're running the stock steel distributor gear even with an aftermarket cam. High volume oil pumps can accelerate gear wear if you run a high viscosity oil and the oil pressure is over 60psi. Most of the gear failures have been with Hesco's bronze gear (softer) which is really designed for race engines.

You are really starting to make me look bad! :x

Na not really, It is much better to get the right info out then the wrong opinion :D

It is the oil pump that applies the load to the dist gear.

Since the oil pump shaft meshes with the distributor shaft, a high oil pressure will put more load on the distributor gear so you are indeed correct.
