pipe plug next to camshaft

I got my 00 block back from the machine shop yesterday and noticed that the pipe plug next to the camshaft was missing, I checked my 94 block and there was a pipe plug in the hole. Is this necessary or is there a benefit to not putting a plug back in the hole? I will be running the earlier style camshaft & timing set.

You need it.
There should be one on the back (flywheel) side of the block as well.

The plug is in the end of the main oil galley that feeds all the lifters and bearings in the engine. if it is not in, you will not have any oil pressure. If you follow the hole from the center of the oil filter mount, you will see it intersects this hole.

I have the pipe on the back of the block and the driverside, but not the one behind the cam gear.

That's what I was looking for! Thanks you just saved me some serious headaches!
