Its dark out now (not that ever stopped me before....) but i will try
ok i'll brb.... LOL
EDIT: also wanted to add, i rolled the engine up to TDC, popped the dizzy top, and the rotor was dead centered on the #1 electrode. I know other people with aftermarket cams have had to index the distributor, and i can't remember where the ideal position was, the leading/middle/trailing edge of the rotor.

hmmmmm let me tell you how frustrating it is to try and test the male side of a round pin connector! I could not find a resistance lower then 380 ohm. I'll search locally for a new sensor tomorrow.... Thanks for the alldata info dave

Send me a PM with your email so I can send the links with pics on the crank pos sensor check, and the cam pos sensor install.

Dave thanks for the e-mails. I would not say my distributor is indexed perfectly, but relatively close. I'm not really sure how the index of the distributor being a few degrees off would create this problem (especially knowing it seems to be effected by heat)
Needless to say, if i locate a CPS tomorrow and try installing it with ill results, i'll cut the ears and rotate the dizzy

I sent you the distributor link because in your earlier post you said "I know other people with aftermarket cams have had to index the distributor, and i can't remember where the ideal position was, the leading/middle/trailing edge of the rotor". So I thought the distributor link might help. I hope you get it figured out. I know if it was my jeep I might want to

it up!

With the timing mark on the the damper lined up on zero at TDC, it sounds/reads like the trailing edge of the rotor should be lined up with the furthest edge of the electrode. I guess this is to offset any advance of timing that will happen (as i don't think any ECU retards timing, except potentially during cranking). I know the newer jeeps with coil packs are known to be real picky if the cam position sensor is detected "out of sync", i just don't think my OBD 1 ECU is advanced enough to know the difference in a few degrees of timing on the dizzy. However, since i have no other logical explanation, other then replacing sensors (i HATE HATE HATE changing parts, i am NOT a parts changer, i'm a MECHANIC), its worth a stab at it, and costs me nothing.

Problem solved.
I threw a CPS sensor at it today, and this time i was not surprised when the problem re-occoured. So i scribed the distributor, followed Dave's e-mail to a "T" for indexing the distributor (after cutting the ears off). Reconnected everything, and when i turned the key i heard an immediate difference, it was not missing or "caming" at an idle. I tested it, went for some gas, drove it around the block, tach'd it out a few times, and it NEVER missed a beat.....
Now has anybody ever seen a stock indexed distributor cause this kind of problem before?

I think me and others in this thread had assumed that your distributor was already indexed correctly and that we were looking for component failures.
Glad you got it running right. I know how it is to have something that doesn't work as intended.

Chris i never would have suspected it, as the distributor worked fine in its stock location for 400 miles. I had also mentioned once before in some thread, somwhere, lost forever LOL that i did not need to index my distributor and it ran fine, and contributed that to the "Mopar" brand cam. However, i was clearly not right. It was a good 15-20 deg's off, which works out to 30-40 crank degrees off. I think the crank and cam position sensor confused the ECU in which cylinder was up next and briefly cut the coil and fuel until it could re-sync

WOW, I'm glad to hear you got it running again. I will have to remember this when I finally put mine all back together!

Now you can look forward to finishing braking in the motor.

I'm sure glad you fixed this. Mine has started doing the exact same thing, right at 3000 rpm. Mine is an '03 with coil-on-plug and the cut-off-distributor type cam sensor and, even though I indexed it carefully, apparently it's wrong. Am I correct in assuming that a dealer tech can synchronize the cam and crank with his electronic wonder window?

I'll search for the article on how to time it, it was posted here not long ago. Apparently rolling the engine up to TDC and using a tooth pick to align the cam sensor through the locator hole is the way to go

If you follow that and do it carefully you shouldn't have a problem. Its pretty easy.. TDC, insert tooth pick, stab it with the plug toward the rear, tighten down, and remove toothpick.
