Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
It is not the torque that is stopping the caps. It could be the caps are out of order or oriented wrong. They only go on one way and each piston has a specific end cap. You may have some backwards. The other thing it could be is insufficient clearance on the bearings or the wrong sized bearings.

Only thing that I'll add is both Rod and Main bearing tangs are on the same side meaning they go tang to tang.
If the rod caps are not numbered or not marked, Look at the champher on the side of the rod. If the chamfer is uneven or mismatched, that's a quick and easy way to detect if a cap doesn't belong with the corresponding rod

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Sorry its been sick for a few days, haven't had a chance to pull those caps back off and check.
I have the whole of next week off to get this motor situated. hopefully its just the caps.
Cylinder head arrived also.
Purchased it from allied motorsports.
I was actually surprised.
Casting looks clean. valves are reconditioned, not new. but that's not necessarily bad, I'll get pics up when I put my valvesprings on it.
They had good reviews online. I paid $300 + a $50 core and free shipping. which is dirt cheap for a 7120 casting.
My overall plan for the old cylinder head is to port it myself, since I know its not cracked.then find a better machine shop to put new seats and stems in, swap it back in when I convert over to the 99+ intake and powersteering.

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Serious question.
Im currently swapping my springs onto the new head.
and I have found something troubling and would like some input.
The retainers are quite a bit bigger.
And the valves themselves are different than my other ones. the stock ones only have one step.
the keepers are different.
The bigger keepers fit. and the valve spring seems to be okay. But I am paranoid it'll drop a valve.
A few pics to explain as best I can.
I put the larger keepers into the head. the smaller ones sit almost at the bottom of the retainers and dip way below the surface of the retainer which doesnt seem okay
the bigger one holds the springs just fine But I just needed to ask for peace of mind.
Thanks

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Is that 3 groove vs 1 groove retainers?

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Been hard at work all day.
Silver XJ You were correct. one of the caps was backwards.
motor is now in the car. just waiting and trying to find out if these keepers are safe to run on these valves.

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
So I measured the valves themselves with a caliper. Both are the same size.
After some research online I have come to find out that single groove valves sit at a different degree then the 3 groove.
There is also some debate online from what I can find as to whether it is safe to run these. Are there other 3 groove keepers I can buy that are bigger and would fit the springs up top ?
I really don't want to drop a valve

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
So I have been playing Around with the keepers, the set that came with the head isn't going through the valve spring. But does sit a few thousandths above the retainer surface. It's so close. But should clear the rocker, so I'm installing the 3 grooves

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Ugh.
Is there a trick to getting the engine and trans to mount to one another ?
I can get it close. But when I start to torque down the top and side bolts. everything binds up. and motor wont turn over.
I pulled the transmission down to check the torque converter is still seated correctly, It is. and spins freely.
Im going to try again tomorrow. but Ive put at least 8 or 9 hours into connecting the two now. It looks like it lines up. then nothing.
any tips ?

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Make sure the torque converter is in fact fully seated. You may need to pick the front of it up, rotate and push it back.
If it is in you might need to pick it up again a bit while pulling the engine to it.
Also, make sure that there isn't a pilot bushing left in your 258 crank.

Re: Refresh on 4.6 stroker
Is there something wrong with this valve tip or is that a reflection going on?
