Silverxj, so what your saying is that comp cams will work in a 4.0 but they were not designed for that engine. I have had bad luck with C.C. in the past, I installed their cam & valve springs in a big block Olds I built and it thrashed the valvetrain. I replaced the cam & springs with product from Mondello, who is Olds specific and had great performance and quiet valvetrain. I was told C.C. is a jack of all trades, master of none. So if they sell you a cam for an engine it was not designed for I believe it. That being said I am still thinking about using a Comp cam in my stroker but I am nervous. It seems that they use very aggresive profiles with lots of lift, Olds engines have small pistons and long strokes so they respond to longer duration more than higher lift. It would seem to me that a 4.6 stroker would react the same way. Just my two cents, thanks for listening

ok i did a little reading and found an article with Four Wheeler when they built a budget 4.6L. i'm running the comp cams 68-231-4 with 926-12 valve springs and they ran a similar camshaft from crane cams (#753905) that has very similar specs but they didn't say what springs they used so i looked up the cam to see what was recommended. they show crane part# 96803-12 and they have 1.435in outside diameter, 330lbs/in spring rate, and a 1.037in bind. my springs are 1.475 outside diameter, 415lbs/in spring rate, and 1.140in bind. so would the crane cam springs be better or still too strong?

If you read a little on the forum here, you'll find that your best bet is Mopar performance springs, part # 5249464, with matching locks and retainers. That's what I used with my Comp 232-4

WHOA!! i knew a roller cam would be expensive but daaang! they're more expensive then the roller set up for my pontiac and i thought that was expensive! oh well, money is no object in the case of HP, performance, and reliability. looks like 2011 tax money will be spent well before received!

Before you jump in on the roller cam do a bit of research on here first then make your own decision if it is worth it.

you are right on that, research is the most important. it probably won't be till winter 2011/12 being i want to get my lift, tires, and gears installed and use it next year. so for now if i can take care of the lifter noise at start up i think i'll be happy with it with all the other upgrades i'm doing this time around.

I think if you change springs your lifter noise may go away. However, even using the Mopar performance springs I have had issues with Comps' lifters bleeding down. But i have also had that problem with others. If that was my only problem I wouldn't care. It goes away with in 30 seconds or less after start.

Anyhow, to bring this thread back on topic I spent about an hour fishing around in the oil pan with the borescope. I couldn't get a real good view so I'll be dropping the oil pan tomorrow.

yea it goes away right away it's just annoying especially when you put that much money into something. i will find out for sure what springs are in there on monday, then i'll know if it's the springs being too stiff or just shitty lifters.

what is it your fishing for in the pan? something fail in the stroker again or just inspecting?

The bearings failed once again. I'm thinking that the .040" clearance on #3 if the cause.

i think that its time for you to find a new block that you can start over with. with all the money you have put into this one i think you will be better off. or have the cam holes all bored out and go over sized bearings. if thats possible? if it was mine tho i would go new block.

i sorry for all your :bs: luck with this build, but as we all know that a jeep project is never done, there is always somthing to do or change or make better/fix

I haven't been able to find oversized OD bearings. Durabond, clevite, etc doesn't make any. I have found a sealed power undersized bearings(.010" ID), but how are those used? Turn down the cam to get better clearance or line hone the block with the bearings in place?

Coated bearings maybe?

I'd hate to discard this block because there is a lot of work in it. Decked, bored, hones, mains align honed, various other small mods.

BTW, I believe that knock is actually from the cam bearings. One machinist I talked with said that cam bearings cam make noise with too much clearance. And I think the sound got worse this time as more miles were put on. However, even the previous engine w/o cam bearing failure had the noise though. But they used Comp Cams.

Yeah, I was. I pull it in storage yesterday and checked the bearing today. Ended up pulling the engine.
