Judging from the .048" measurement i think you have a .051" gasket. There should be a part number on the rear right hand of the gasket. You could contact Felpro and see what gasket comes in the kit. When you measured the metal area are you sure there was sufficient force to push the layers against each other?

i suspect it is the 051 gasket just out of logic.
i need to photograph gasket and where i measured to take advantage of your expert opinions! =)
Thanks!

I put the mic on my headgasket part number 9076PTI/9076PT1 printoseal embossed on top
in the blue area i measured a nominal 0.049" all over the gasket
in the metal areas between 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 cylinders i measured between 0.054-0.056"
machinist tells me that it will compress 0.002-3" when torqued. and it will compress the metal down to meet the blue section so i should end up with 0.046 or so compressed thickness if he is correct.

That's the gasket I used and it's .051" compressed.

um-so the blue part ends up floating around under the head?
I measured 0.049 thickness in all areas except the metal rings around the cylinders.

Yes, it won't compress to the thickness of the steel sections.
Edit: Wait.. you don't have an MLS gasket, but that one is .051" compressed... or so that is what it is spec'd at.

so-um-what is final compression distance? my gasket is 049 in blue section. if compressed is 051-then blue section of my gasket will never come under any kind of pressure from head/block.
the steel section around the cyl is 054-056 uncompressed.

I called Fel-Pro tech support (800-325-8886) and they verified gasket 26211 PT is an MLS gasket with a compressed thickness listed at .040". Also, on a side note upper gasket kit HS 26211 PT includes this gasket and viton valve seals.

My MP gasket kit came with the fel-pro 9076pt1 HG(I didn't specify earlier in this thread).

I know how you feel about the deposits and they call everything a special order cause they don't seem to have anything in stock I need these days, this includes the one local Jeep parts dealer around here. Even O rings for fuel pump change they have to get somewhere. But gets me most at smaller parts houses. Example just ordered rebuild dist against my better judgement. Special order of course, must pay for dist in advance and core charge also. Long story short, I get it and it doesn't fit in my 94 block and looks shoddy anyway with a reused gear on it and sandblasted all to heck on the aluminum housing. At least they took it back. But have to drive thirty miles one way to pay in advance sometimes. I'm with you bro.

The gaskets came in and it is a VR MLS gasket. I measured the steel sections at .0408 and the blue at .0426 so it looks good. The question I have is do the rivets holding the layers together fit in some depression in the head / block? I have not pulled my engine yet or I would just look.
Thanks.

They fit right in the water jackets iirc.

x2.. the rivets will either fall in to the jacket on the head to block side. I asked the very same question several years ago.

Ok, thank you. I am assuming then that they do not impede the flow too much then.

ok i'm confused. how many gaskets do we have available in the .040 to .044 range, where's everybody getting them, and what part number are you using? summit's backorder until late september on 1 of the part number i found in this thread but i'm not sure if it's just the headgasket or if it's the set
