Plechtan wrote:Well I looked around, and you can get a 5.9" rod for a MITSUBISHI Eclipse ( 4 banger) that has a 1.115 BE width ( jeep= 1.060 be) and a BE diameter of 1.771. so if you wanted to offset grind you crank .3", you could use these rods and they would only cost you about $100 each. It does use a .826 floating pin, so you would need to go with custom pistons, but at least you would not need custom pistons and custom rods. Custom pistons at about $100 each is better that custom rods at more than $200 each.
That rod will not work there is not enough room at the bottom of the cylinder the piston pin will be coming out of the bottom of the cylinder. I know this because I have 2 sets of them and I was going to try to use them but upon doing all of the measuring it simply will not work. What I have going on here is as long of a stroke that will fit in the cylinder and still get a piston on the top of it and not come out the bottom.

nice cam specs also.

have you put any thought into cryo treatments and or at least running the parts through polydyn and get the coatings?

steve-o
Hey Steve,
I did have the crank cryod I don't have any time left to do any coatings (I waited for 14 weeks to get my pistons "THANK YOU" JE  )as much as I'd love to.that will happen more than likely when I do the fresh up on the motor next winter.

I'd be interested to know what rods/pistons he used without the pistons coming out of the bore at BDC, how he managed to clearance the block/oil pan from the rod bolts, and how he can avoid contact between the rod bolts and the cam for that 4.20" stroke. Sounds too good to be true when the highest stroke anyone has ever dared to use in the 4.0 block is 4.06" (Jakes Racing Engines 5.0L stroker) and nobody knows if that was reliable ('cause JRE went out of business soon after they built it).

I don't think rod bolt to cam clearance will be an issue. The rod shouldn't be any closer to the sidewall of the engine during the middle of its stroke, as the the inside of the journal is being ground, and the outside is not being built up. The only part that will vary slightly is the angle of the dangle when the rod is mid stroke

Mgardiner1
You are exactly correct. There is not clearance issues at all. Actually there is more room than in most strokers because the BE journal size is so much smaller.

As for rod and piston design the rod is a 6.400 long 1.771 BE and a .750 pin end and for the piston it is a custom engineered piston with a 18cc dish. It is all on the spreadsheet.

Update on engine
We are almost done with the block.
Got the head final assembled. (good)
Crank clearances were checked (good)
Rods were checked and rechecked. (good)
Pistons are balanced and clearance checked. (good)

Well I certainly hope this custom stroker build-up will be a success 'cause a lot of engineering ingenuity has gone into it. Props to you heartlandoffroad for coming up with the idea and the build specs.

Did you use head studs? If so, who are they made by and do you have a part number?

Dyno update

would of had it done but I couldn't get into the painless (Paininthea$$) ECM. I got all the software from painless but still could not get into it. Called Jeff Abotte at painless he says that I got to have this exact serial adapter to make it link. Evidently this adapter is only in stores out west because they sure as heck don't have it in any stores in Mo. I spent 3 hours on the phone with every computer store within 100 miles and most of them had never even herd of the brand. So then we found a desk top and eliminated the adapter all together still couldn't get it to link so called Jeff again all he said was we had to have that adapter which makes no sense what so ever but I know if I don't get that adapter that's all he is ever going to say is that I need this adapter so I got 1 on order.
The stupid part is that the instructions say that you can plug into a serial port or use this certain adapter. Then it says that most other adapters will work. But when I call Jeff Abotte at Paininthea$$ he says the instructions are wrong. Then I got aggravated and asked him if you got to have this one freeking adapter why don't you just include it in your kit. He told me that I could get aggravated or just get the rite part then he hung up the phone on me.
We did get the Cam broke in with the program that is already in the ECM but we couldn't put much of a load on it.
