Any update on this? 10-11 even getting on it seems very very low, and 14... well when I get on mine I still get 15-16 and on a long highway stretch I see 20mpg with most highway driving in high the 18's to 19's with the occasional 20) I have trutracs front and rear 33 12.5's BFG AT KO's and 4.56 gearing with an old 240,000 mile AW4 that needs to be replaced now (it's just starting to slip in OD).Mgardiner1 wrote:dwg86 wrote:Thanks Mike, BTW, how's the Jeep running?
Been running REALLY good. Thanks for askingJust a little disappointed with the fuel mileage. If i keep my foot out of it, i can't get better then 14 MPG. If i keep crushing the skinny pedal, i'm gettin around 10-11 mpg.

Re: Machine shop bill. Good work cost $$$$$$$$$
Im having my machine work done at Tlb machine in norwichtown ct. So far for machine work and parts i have given him $3,000.00 and i expect it will cost me another thousand before im done. Heres what im getting, Head-magnafluxed,acid washed/painted oversized valves 1.94 intake 1.60 exhaust, 7 angle valve job w/radius, shaved(not sure how much yet), ported&polished, small block springs....Block-magnafluxed, acid washed painted, decked, line bored, all new bearings pressed in, freeze plugs, bored 80 over.....Intake-gasket matched, flowed, polished......258 12cw crank-turned, blanced....Custom forged JE 11:1 pistons, molly rings, crower cam, factory 4.0 rods rebuilt, rotating assembly balanced.
I may be forgetting something, I don't have the build sheet in front of me. This guy does nothing but race car engines for the modified tour and high performance engines for a few local people. For anoher $800 he offers to completey build the engine, break it in and dyno tune it on a water brake engine dyno. Being that this is not only my first stroker but my first engine build in general i would love your feed back.
It does concern me slightly to see that most of you have spent less than half of what i have already and im not done yet....hopefully im not getting bent over but this guy comes highly recommended.

Most of us are doing most of the labor intensive work ourselves. THAT is where the real expense is. many aren't going so far as to flow matching ports, etc etc etc

That's not a terrible price for a machine shop in CT. CT is not a buisness friendly state, high taxes, utilities, and overall cost of living for the owner and employees. I work for a shop in Oakville ct.
Are you having you're stock 4.0 rods stress relieved or treated in any way and are you going to ARP rod bolts?
Just curious, what's the labor rate there?
The enemy of good thing is wanting something better.

Hey four05,
My 4.7 has ended up being around $6500-$7000.00. That's not including all the external stuff I had before the build. Makes the Hesco engines seem kinda'...realistic. Very close to your build and work performed. I have 2.02/1.60 valves, if I remember correctly. How are you gonna' manage that compression? Maybe check out the water injection, like I'm gonna' try. I know this is a painful/stupid amount of cash for a 6 that's a 40+ year old design, but when they run right it's FANTASTIC!

Re: Machine shop bill. Good work cost $$$$$$$$$
I just crested the $5500.00 mark, now it's on to a stand alone megasquirt system and air intake. Theres a 68mm billet throttlebody out there for like 380 delivered but im torn, some say it's needed others disagree. I talked to the guys from NC who have thoe jeeps in the Krusty videos on youtube and they say that the original 1988 OBD1computer and 23lb injectors are producing over 300hp in there stroker. Im nobody to disagree but the guys at JM Corvette in manchester ct say that it's not possible to get that power from such a small injector and a stock comp. I guess Im just looking for some direction as to where i should go from here. The machine shop work and parts are all great but what do i do about making it perform to it's ability in my 93 xj with a stock computer? Has anyone else had this problem?
Whats the deal with water injection??

Some would say that a RENIX has more potential for power... so yeah i would say its pretty important to get it straight.
Whats even more important is to talk about how much machine work costs in this thread

Hesco starts their custom stroker builds at $4,500 and they Dyno them. They also warranty them. Doesn't seem like a bad deal, you would get their rods and pistons right off the bat.
