No, the engine really only "see's" the DCR. I think the only time that SCR would potentially be more of a factor is when boosting.
I liked some of the Isky grinds. Some of the Clifford ones were interesting too. I never considered the comp's or the crane's. Felt that they were too run of the mill, or too many other noted failures.

I haven't and won't consider crane cams for that very reason, read too many threads about them failing. Clifford has always been a mystery to me...i've been thru their site and it looks like they have some interesting stuff...yet i've never come across a thread on a jeep-related forum where someone talks about using a clifford product.

There's also custom grinds from Engle; but i'm not comfortable enough in my knowledge of cams to go that route right now.

in order to get a DCR of 8:1 with the isky cam, the block deck clearance would have to be set to .003 (quench .040). Pistons still dished 24cc. SCR ends up at 9.47:1.

Yeah I ran into some problems when ordering that grind. First one they sent me was just the 133126, which had a smaller exhaust lift. Pretty much the opposite of why I ordered that particular cam. I called them and they said it was the right grind, until they saw the website that listed the specs I wanted. They said send it back, and well send you out a cam with that grind. Long time went by and nothing. Had to call again to get them to actually find the cam I sent back. Then had to call them again to get them to actually do something toward a new cam. They said the grind listed on the website wasnt possible and it might have to be changed. Sounds great,Ill be looking for it. Never got it. Called the supervisor this time and after a couple emails I finally got a cam with the numbers I was looking for. I think ordering it over the phone the first time would definitely yield better results.

I saw that in your thread and figured some of that delay had to do with the other stuff you had going on taking priority over chasing isky down for the cam. Thanks for the heads up, I probably wouldn't have been as specific as i needed to be over the phone with them.

More fun with the CR calculator...Does anyone have experience with Lunati Voodoo Cams? Using the specs for their 63501 cam looks similar to the isky and seems to fit my needs. With .010 deck clearance, pistons dished 24cc, i now have a quench of .047, DCR of 7.99:1 and an SCR of 9.35:1. (Could someone double check the numbers i used in the CR calculator against the specs i just linked. In the CR calculator i used Duration=256, Lobe Separation=112, Advance=4)

One last bump...its time to start ordering parts and before i do i was hoping to get some opinions. I was at the machine shop for about an hour yesterday going over my build, and the machinist suggested i consider something like this:

KB944 .030 pistons, 21.73cc dish
.009 deck height, .041 gasket = .050 quench
SCR 9.5:1; DCR 8.1:1

He believes that i still should be ok running no more than mid range gas on this config. The other possibility is:

Silvolite 2229030-6 .030 over dished 24cc
.009 deck height, .041 gasket = .050 quench
SCR 9.29:1; DCR 7.94:1

I'm using the Lunati cam in both builds.

The extra cost of the KB944s would be almost offset by not having to buy 258 rods and not needing the pistons dished. There are a couple of other decent reasons to go with off the shelf pistons, he mentioned all the same stuff i read in the KB944 thread. The gasket thickness comes from a post in SilverXJ's project thread; which is why i revised my quench number to be a little higher.
.
Basically which setup would be better for a daily driver that hopefully runs on 87 or 89 gas? Any suggestions on tweaking either configs welcome.

No other real suggestions other than you can get your deck height a bit lower for a lower number quench.

What I know is that my old build looked like this:
SCR: 10.11:1
DCR: 8.63:1
Quench: .0564"

I was able to run midgrade on it.

My new build will be this:
SCR: 9.57:1
DCR: 8.19:1
Quench: .044"

Much better quench and lower compression. I am fairly confident that I will be able to run regular.

Also see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=551&p=6179#p6179

One with a DCR of 8:1, SCR of 9.6:1, quench of .045 and running 87
And another with a SCR of 8.98, DCR 7.56 and a .0565 quench and running 87

Thanks for the links, i didn't catch that new thread last night. I've been thru seanyb's project thread a bunch of times, my first thread is based on much of what i found there.

Good to know tho your first build was able to run on mid-grade; my current plans are nowhere near that high an SCR or DCR. I've been going back and forth on how much to have the block decked since reading your post earlier in the thread. I've got a little more time until i have to settle on how much to deck the block which i'll use it to read as much as i can on deck height and quench.

Well if i can get my driveshaft situation figured out this weekend, i'll let you know how 8.25 DCR runs on midgrade at sea level! LOL

Glad you guys reminded me. I would vote and say that 89 is just fine, I did not experience pinging at any RPM or load. However, some of you know of my recent 2.8K RPM problems. I don't believe its octane related, but for the poop of it, i filled it back up with premium tonight until i can get my problems sorted out.
