Umm... yea you're a dick. Anyways thanks Cheromaniac for that reply. Now I understand better what octane fuels means with quench height. Since I have a complete 258 block I'm going with the rods and crank because I already have them and they are free lol. So this 80 +/- quench height thing now, If my quench height is lets say 80 nad I take ten off the block and ten off the head does that drop quench height to 60 ? I don't mind running 89 octane or so. Shit that's a 10 cent difference on a gallon big deal. Even if you drop a few hundred more to get a 43 quench and run 87 octane how many gallons of gas do you need to buy to make up the difference of cost and start coming ahead ? Answer is a fricking lot !!!

Sock 4.0 is around an 80 quench if I remember reading right. Hell I always run mine on 87 with no issues.

So your going with the painted VC's, cool.

The stock 4.0 has an 8.8:1 CR and a 0.073" quench height.
If my quench height is lets say 80 and I take ten off the block and ten off the head does that drop quench height to 60 ?
The quench height is the clearance between the head surface and the flat portion of the piston crown when the piston is at TDC. Shaving the head won't change that but shaving the block deck definitely will.
The original poor man's stroker has a 9.25:1 CR and a 0.088" quench. Taking 0.010" off the block will reduce the quench to 0.078" (closer to stock) but it'll also raise the CR to 9.43:1. Smoothening and polishing the combustion chambers in the head will add a little volume, bring the CR down again slightly, and increase the engine's resistance to detonation so it's a detail that's definitely worth your attention. You could also do the same to the piston dishes.

Maybe he's going to get the paint at Wally World?

Man you just don't give up. I can paint a room right or left handed without tape or drop cloths. Can you ??? No so I won't start on you being an idiot then. Anyways.... Making more sense now with 10 off the block 10 is lower on quench. I'm learning more here. As of now my block is at the shop as well as my 720 rods and crank from the 81' 258 block. My 682324 is on its way here and things are moving along. Hopefully with ten off the head and a little more porting I should be less than 80 quench putting me close to 87 versus 89 octane but either way is fine. With the whole per ignition thing if I upgraded the ignition and a hotter spark plug maybe that will help pre ignition idk

Ok, you win.
Let us know how it all works out.

Yep, hotter spark plugs PROMOTE preignition, but tightening the quench will help eliminate Detonation.

I've got a better idea.
We should meet up with Russ and have a Bishop Buehl beerfest.

That's a good thought Dino. However I'd hate to waste good beer.

If the machine shop is going to deck the block 0.010", why not have them deck it 0.030 or 0.040" and get it right.
Either way, you will probably need new length push rods.

X2,

Also wanted to add that decking your block does help your quench but surfacing your head does not.
It will decrease the chamber volume and increase your static compression ratio. That's assuming I read and understood your thread correctly.

Also keep in mind past a certain point the quench becomes less efficient.
