Re: Is this block normal or ruined? Pic.
Nice block. That appears to have less metal taken off than most i have seen. I am not worried about the extra clearance of the big end of rod on crank. Even the stock rods on stock crank have play from what I've seen. I did not go into thousandths but with feeler gauges it looks like with the chevy rods it leaves around .05 of total play. So with the stock rods it would still be .04 right?? I highly doubt it would create an oil pressure or bearing wear problem at .01 more play if it's only getting a shot of oil at a certain crank rotation anyway. .04 stock would already be creating problems if that was the case. Good Main and rod bearings keep pressure up. Oil Pressure should be the same if not more from the new rods and bearings not having the oil squirt hole for whatever that did. Extra cam and cylinder wall oil? I'm more worried about that than anything. And as far as the rod slapping back and forth a little more I cant really see that being a big problem either. I did a quick placement of the crank and chevy rod in the block. Looks like I will have to grind some meat out of the block so the rod and rod bolt don't hit. Hard to tell without piston in there keeping the rod centered. Not worried about the piston coming out of the block. It looks like the piston pin will come out of the bottom about half way. So skirts should be good. I'm almost positive i can swing the rod at more of an angle on the piston without hitting the skirt than how far the rod swings in the block so i dont think it will touch the piston skirt but we shall see. Here is the piston and the rod to block clearance.
