not much to see honestly. it wont show on a video i think. it's mostly a feel thing.sly-jeeper wrote:can you post a video? that might help us understand a bit more
How do i check the preload, i'd need to pull the valve cover and get an adjustable pushrod, right?

Re: new stroker build, some issues
yes pull valve cover and you can use a push rod checker or a dial indicator...most stock 4.0s idle kinda rough with a miss or lope here and there...your cammed stroker might be loping buts its hard to say without hearing it

Re: new stroker build, some issues
Yes, if one or a few valve seats are machined deeper in the head it can cause different spring install heights and different spring loads. However, valve float won't happen at idle unless something is really screwed up.
Check your preload...
Do you still have a mis under load or just at idle?
Whats the PN on those injectors?

Re: new stroker build, some issues
The comp 232 should not have a lope. It should have a fairly smooth idle but could have a slight misfire at idle.. not enough to cause a major shake or anything.sly-jeeper wrote:your cammed stroker might be loping buts its hard to say without hearing it

Re: new stroker build, some issues
this isn't just loping, it's basically running on 5 cyls. It feels really gnarly with any little bit of pedal. it's got the same or less power than my old tired 4.0.
i feel a slight miss at idle, just like as if i unplugged a plug wire. gets harsher under load or acceleration.
is there anything in the distributor that would cause this? it did get pretty wet a week or so ago.

Re: new stroker build, some issues
check and double check your preload sounds like a valve train issue...danimal wrote:this isn't just loping, it's basically running on 5 cyls. It feels really gnarly with any little bit of pedal. it's got the same or less power than my old tired 4.0.

Re: new stroker build, some issues
Something in the distributor could cause these issues, such as a bad cap or rotor. Are you 100% sure you index the distributor correctly?

Re: new stroker build, some issues
yea i indexed the distributor correctly. i had it one tooth off but fixed it. cap and rotor and plug wires are in decent shape.
Just got the valve cover off, going to attempt to check the preload with an indicator

Re: new stroker build, some issues
Make sure that you let the lifters fully decompress before finding 0 lash and zeroing the dial. Also, find a nice flat spot on the lifter for the indicator tip to sit. A curved surface can skew the readings.

Re: new stroker build, some issues
ok this is weird... the indicator didnt reall move, but the valve did. it seems like it opens the valve, then the lifter slowly bleeds down and the indicator drops about .04-.05" after a few seconds.
I tried a few cyls, same results. tried rotating the crank some more, same results.
