I am not that familiar with the renix system (i'm assuming this is on the 88 in your profile), so i can't give you an idle timing number. However, just checking ignition with a timing light will allow you to see if there is spark there when the limited happens. However it won't show the quality of the spark. However it would still be a good test. You can also check if the injectors are firing by listing to them with an automotive stethoscope, using a noid light on one (don't know how well that would work at RPM, or trying to get the timing light inductive pickup in the correct location to pick up the injector feedback.
What I am trying to get at is that it is fuel or spark (unless you have a clogged air filter and I doubt that). You appear to have partially eliminated fuel pressure/flow, so that leaves spark or injector issues. Which would most likely be a sensor issue. Another option is that it may be really going lean instead of a misfire showing lean.
You may want to look over this as well for various sensor testing: http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Eng ... ostics.htm

I know the "cam sensor" on a renix is essentually just for injecter sequencing, but a defective one CAN cause your symptoms. If you were experiencing bottom end performance issues, I would say that your distributer was retarded one tooth or more. Defective aftermarket tach ? Check those grounds again ! Good luck !
