Marty, thanks for bringing this thread up.

Running an OBD1 based 5.0 stroker. Played with the crank sensor for more timing and moved the IAT to the CAI. Fiddled with a MAP sensor to change the duty cycle of the injectors. Overall it runs well but there is room for improvement.

The 70mm TB`s have peaked some genuine interest but I don`t think the full benefit will be achieved with an OBD1 system.

Enter Flying Ryan. Hell of a nice guy that has a lot of good information. I do believe that with his help my stroker with or without the 70mm TB can run a lot better.

In process now of collecting the parts I need to make my own OBD2 engine harness with the OBD underdash port.

Found that a combination of Airtex, Dorman and Standard make the connectors for the sensors.....If I will even need them......... Including the OBD2 port underdash.

Still looking for the 32 way C1, 2 and 3`s at the ECM.. Once I source the "3 C`s" I`ll start laying wires. If anyone happens to knw where to find the ECM connectors please pass it on.

Lucky that in my home state we don`t have to worry about emissions. So I`ll have Ryan cal out the emission related components and concentrate on the engine side of the tune.

The guy impressed me with his knowledge and up front honest approach.

If you have a pick and pull salvage yard neat you you can usually get the connectors with a length of wire.

In regard to the original question...

Yes, just received and loaded my custom tune from FlyinRyan and find immediate improvements in drivability! I've still got to change my injectors from Venom to Ford but will hopefully get that done when the engine cools down from the test drive. I'm very surprised at some of the more mundane characteristics that have improved as well as performance aspects. I suspect (if I can keep my foot out of it) that my gas mileage may improve a bit too.

I'll report back later...

That is just what I may do Chris. Snag an ECM from most any OBD2 Chrysler and as much of a harness as I want. The pin out on the ECM will be the same just the base cal will be different. Since Ryan will change it anyways that is a non-issue.

Jsawduste -
I've got this laying around that was sent to me in error. I never have figured out what it goes to but it is a 6 cylinder harness. Let me know if you think it will help you. Sorry, the pic didn't make the transfer to the new PC, you'll have to follow the link.

Thanks for the consideration George.

I am interested but need to get educated on OBD2 harnesses. The ECM has 3 / 32 pin ports. C1, 2 and 3.

In the linked picture I am trying to ID the 3 ECM connectors.
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/myste ... ss-684775/

THINK they are in lower part of the picture just left of center. Below the injector rail and would be the second group of connectors from the left border. Confused because I am only seeing what look to be 2 ECM type connectors when there should be 3. Surely it is my lack of understanding the harness layout but just want to be sure.

I would be interested but need a little guidance to ID what I am looking at.

Thanks and look forward to a response.

I just completely re-wrapped/loomed my 98 TJ manual harness, and that harness is missing a bunch of stuff that's on mine for the alternator, ignition coil, a/c compressor (mine has the plug even though it didn't come with a/c).... plus the splits where the harness forks off for the plugs on the firewall occur in a different location. Maybe it's a YJ harness?

Only two ECM connectors actually go direct to the engine harness, the other one disconnects and goes to the firewall harness.

Thanks for the clarification.

The third plug would need to be utilized for communication with the under dash OBD port.

George, as you can see your harness is missing a few pieces. I`d still be interested as it might have some usable parts. Still going to have to do some digging for the correct set up.

I completed my build in 09 so memory isn't crisp but I knew when I got it that it wasn't right because I kept all of my harnesses that I removed. When I linked the pic, I too noticed the lack of the third plug to the PCM. As someone stated above, from what I can recall, there's no difference in a manual/auto harness anywhere much less at the engine. I was surprised by that but apparently the same plug goes to the tranny on either (seems strange to me or there is a difference and I just got lucky since mine too is a stick). I acquired this "mystery" harness from an ebay seller as I was attempting to buy both the engine and tranny harness. He had pictured both under the title "tranny harness" and when it arrived without the engine part, I demanded satisfaction. Two weeks later, the mystery arrived. Maybe it is to a YJ, I dunno but it's just sitting in my storage facility gathering dust! You would think that there would be some marking on it (like on all the other harnesses) but there is not.

Keep digging jsawduste and if this thing can be of help to you, we'll strike a deal. A really good deal since it's hard to sell a mystery at top dollar!!! I'll also go to my storage place to see if what the other two harnesses are as well. I think I've got two different dash harnesses over there. I meant to sell them on ebay but when I completed the build, I was pretty tired of wiring, etc.

George,
yes please I am interested and having the third plug for/from the dash harness would make my quest a bit easier.

Thanks again !!

I have one of those.

1996 Jeep Cherokee
Cherokee Briarwood

Engine # 608MX28111 (4L, 6 Cyl.)
Automatic Trans.4 Speed AW4 4WD

Export Build
CALIBRATION: 96 XJ 4.0L A4 BUX

PCM ECU on car:

P56041 298

T1636 JBSAA

Part Number: 56041298 New # 04886963

Same construction and appearance as 56041 296 but

NOT THE SAME PROGRAMMING !!

Main difference-
No Catalytic Converter
No O2 Sensors
Leaded Gas/Leaded Fuel Emissions

If anyone can extract the Programing from the ECU memory, I would like to know.

Because it is an export version, they will not sell it to you in the US.

It is the same as the 296 but the program is different.
Chrysler seem to have forgotten they ever made that version.
The repair shops cant access the program from Chrysler.
