I think they changed all the engines in 99. Maybe someone with with a 2000 or 2001 xj can take a picture of their accessory drive.
I was reviewing some emails from Lee Hurley over the weekend, in one of them he says that the 2005 AND 2006 have thicker cylinder walls, and can be bores to 4" and still have a minimum .125 cylinder wall, so my vote would be for a 2005-2006 Wrangler engine block.
Edit:
I just called the local Jeep dealer, the can get a 2006 short block ( new) for $2,630.00 Most of the junk yards only have running motors for 2005-2006 and they generally want $1,000- $1,500 for them. You may get lucky and find a late model core.

The changes to the XJ engine in 99 were very minor externally. The AC will bolt on, and the water pump is the same between 987 and 2000. The timing cover may have changed a bit. If he uses the 99+ intake manifold there will be some mods to the power steering/mounting, but he can use the 97 manifold and pump without problems. I don't think the engine mount bolts changed either on the 2000 as I recall using a standard tap to clean them out on mine.
A 00+ TJ engine will not work in an XJ with out MAJOR mods.

Riot: Your basic questions have been answered in so many places, including this site and other stroker sites and by Googling. It sometimes helps if you dig some of it up on your own as it's easier to remember after going thru the drudgery we all have done to get at what ever points we are at in our knowledge base. Hope not introuble with Silver XJ now. Darn if I am, I'll owe him an apology for getting in his conversation without being asked.
Blame it on old age and mud between my ears.
Me and my XJ both have high milage and are more than half way worn out, just from having so much fun over the years together.

thanks for the advice everyone.. i just asked my local machine shop to keep an eye out for a 99-2001 block and it looks like i will be using an Alabama cylinder head... i have been a little busy i just picked up another 258 and tore it down and now i will have 2ct 12cw cranks that made (10/10) and 2 sets of 4.2 rods so what 2 do with the other stuff... maybe another stroker after this one......
i know the question has been answered a million times but what about rods.... now remember this is going to be a DAILY DRIVER so and down sides to using 4.2 rods or are there any major upsides to using the 4.0 rods...........(i know i will have to go custom pistons if i use the 4.0 rods)
silver xj what is your gas mileage like (if you drive nice)
thanks everyone

4.2 rods cause expensive trying to stop pinging problems. 4.0 rods way to go but expensive but no pinging and can Zero deck block.

There are aftermarket headers to replace the iron manifolds on the late sixes, I installed one on an '03 Wrangler at work, I don't recall the brand? It was C.A.R.B. legal, I put the supplied sticker on the hood right next to the emissions sticker.
