Re: Newb questions!
I love the 30ab. It really wakes up at low 2Ks and pulls hard to redline(great for my street Jeep). If you don't have too high of a DCR, I'd advance it to bring the powerband down some hundred rpms. It has a medium lift and duration compared to other cams, but also has a small overlap, so it builds torque sooner. It's one part I'd use again from my build(along w/ the 5249464 springs and matching retainers and locks). And as stated, if you want more lift from any of the mopar cams, use the 1.7rrs.

Re: Newb questions!
The stock rockers are 1.5 or 1.6? Been looking at studding the head and some crower rollers with a 1.6 ratio, but if te stockers are 1.6 i might reconsider. Also, i would like some opinions from those who have a "0" deck. Other than servicability down the road, what negative are there to a "0" deck? I cant think of any.gradon wrote:I love the 30ab. Re: Newb questions!
The stock rockers are 1.6. I am using the Crower rollers, and a zero deck. I like the rockers and zero deck, but I only have 400 miles on my stroker right now. The millage will climb fast as my work commute is 85 miles round trip.Biggrnjeep97 wrote:The stock rockers are 1.5 or 1.6? BTW, the mopar 30AB cam is no longer available.

Re: Newb questions!
Got some updates and some more questions:
1) Ordered a set of KB944's early last week, along with a cloyes double roller, and some total seal moly rings. Guy at Cncmotorsports.com says it'll all be here by the end of the week!
2) Ive been toying with the compression calculator alot. Im trying to get some ideas on CR and Quench. I found this company that makes copper headgaskets for the 4.0. http://www.headgasket.com/gaskets.html After an extensive conversation with him, im interested in getting one made, but i need some input on quench. With a "0" deck height, my quench will be .054 or .043, depending on which headgasket i choose. Respectively, my SCR ~9.7 and ~9.5. Too high? IDK what threshold these motors have for knock and i feel as if a low quench height is super important. I want to run premium fuel. Do i possibly go with a thinner HG and unshroud the valves to pick up some CC's?
Currently =3.935inx3.895in, 58cc, 0 deck, 21.7dish, .043/.054 gasket, 30ab cam
3) With the above being said, whats your opinions on copper gaskets? Whats the min allowable quench height when taking into account rod stretch and carbon build up? .033"?
-Will
*EDIT: Gradon, do you have a stock stall AW4 torque converter?

Re: Newb questions!
I would keep quench to 0.035" or greater... since you are paying close attention to EVERYTHING, that should be more than enough room to accomodate things. Since you are already in the mid 9's on the CR, I would shoot for as little quench as you can achieve without breaking the bank. the difference between 9.5 and 9.7 on the "knock potential" is NOT great, especially on an iron head. If this was a choice between 9.0 and 10.0, then we would have something to talk about. that said: if you can get the real tight quench, but do a little combustion chamber work to drop CR, then thats the best of all.
I don't have much experiance with copper head gaskets... however... you CAN get a MLS (multi layer steel) gasket for the engine that is ~0.043 -ish thick. It really doesn't cost much, and it will definately do the job well.

Re: Newb questions!
I'm running an ax15(the 3rd for me, my first was an 88 w/ the ba10). I'd get the VR .043"/.044" mls HG. I'm currently using a .051" Fel-pro 9076pti HG and have .010-.012" deck clearance, so quench is .061-063". I'm also using the sealed power 825cp30s, which have a 15.1cc dish. The compression w/ this setup is 10:1scr and 8.57dcr. You'll be in better shape than me using the VR HG, a zero deck clearance, and your bigger dish KBs, so there should be no pinging issues.

Re: Newb questions!
I don't know of any commercially copper gasket available for the 4.0L. I do know someone on here offered to make me one. But I don't remember whom that was. The MLS .044" gasket is a good compromise though and unless you are planning on running bosst I don't think the copper is really needed. The MLS has a Mopar Performance, Victor Reniz, and Mopar part number. Search on here for a thread on it which has the PNs in it.

Re: Newb questions!
Thanks both for the input guys. Anyone else use a copper gasket or have experience? Does anyone know if the ARP headbolt kit is universal between a 4.2 and a 4.0. Ive never had a 4.2 apart.

I can't find a 5713 head gasket any where. I have an older one, but it is a fiber type as well.
