First stroker, but not locked in on a build!

Post by BREEZE1 »

First of all, I would like to say I love this website.

Well there comes a time in each mans life where he wants something more out of his mighty 4.0l engine. Weather its just not cutting it any more or weather its time to rebuild. Well I’m at that particular cross road! I am a proud owner of two jeeps at the moment. I have a 90 MJ & 98 XJ, the xj motor is needing a little rebuild so why not give her some real grunt!! A few months ago I picked up a 91 HO engine, I have already did a little porting and cleaning on the head. Originally I was planning on doing a simple stroker, 4.5L or 4.6L. I was telling my buddy at work about this, and he decided he wanted to help. With this guy being a great machinist and having plenty of engine builds under his belt I gladly accepted his offer to help! After sharing some specks with him he said “you know I wonder if we could use a sbc 4” piston, since they are dirt cheap?” I did a little research and look to see what the storker gods had to say about it. I did see that 4” pistons are used in 4.8L and up engines. But finding a build on one of these is a mutha!! I know its very risky using 4” pistons being that you have to bore you block .125”. If any one knows of a build using those pistons please send me a link, I just want to see all my options before I pick! I don’t want to do any offset grinding on the crankshaft so I guess that just limits me to 4.8L. Now the things that I can tell you is that we plan on doing further poring on my head, and using bigger sbc valves. I have a 65mm stang tb I was thinking about using. Again, im not dead set on any particular build just yet. But I would really like to find a detailed build on a 4.8L to decipher weather I want to go that wrought or not.
