Shot peening rods

Post by dwg86 »

I am just passing along some info. I couldn't find a company to shot peen my rods for a reasonable price near my house(Atlanta area), or couldn't get a company to do a small order(6 rods). So I started looking on the internet and found a company near Pittsburgh Pa(where I grew up) called BG and S peening and consulting. Being that I work for an airline, and I fly up there often to visit family, I contacted them. They charge $6.00 per rod to shot peen.

The owner ,Bryon, used to work in the shot peening shop at US Air. He formed BG & S after US Air closed their jet engine overhaul operations at the Pittsburgh Airport. BG & S is an authorized FAA repair station, so I was comfortable using them to do my shot peening(training and certification). Great guy to talk to also.

I just talked to him today and he informed me that he got a contract with a connecting rod company to do all their shot peening.

You should have the shot peening done after rod cleaning ,mag particle inspection and balancing(because of grinding), but before resizing because the shot peening process can distort the big end of the rod.

Good issue. I had a hard time finding someone to shot peen my rods and went with cryo tempering instead.
