This is a response to a very old post that is still pertinent to those of us who own a Dodge M37.
When I replaced the 230ci flathead six in my 37 in the late 1960s, mileage increased from 11 to 13mpg.. when I replaced the 318 with a big block Chevy in the early 70s, it went back to 11 again..
