1983 CJ8/04 WJ Resto Mod

1983 Jeep Scrambler (CJ8) WJ Resto-Mod Overview

Project Vision

I want to modernize my 1983 Jeep Scrambler (CJ8) by integrating a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) drivetrain, wiring harness, and what I can of the interior electronics while preserving the rugged, classic look of the Scrambler. The build will combine the reliability of modern Jeep technology with the timeless appeal of the CJ8, transforming it into a fully capable, daily-drivable off-road machine with upgraded comfort, performance, and features.

Drivetrain: High-Performance 4.7L Stroker Engine

At the heart of this build is a 4.7L stroker engine, originally documented in my first build on JeepStrokers.com (username: akadeutsch). I ended up with a relable engine that used to ping at sea level. IT was perfect if you ran 91 oct. The engine was designed to provide significantly more torque and horsepower than the stock 4.2L or the 4.0L motor while maintaining the reliability and simplicity. I bumped the compression in the last build by squashing the quench. I shaved the head and block. But not this time.  I will be changing the recipe this time to stock quench, lower compression for optimal experiance and optional boost.  Custom Exhaust wont be hard in my location.

The drivetrain will be completed with:

Donor 2004 WJ 42RE automatic transmission for a smoother driving experience.
Donor WJ NP242 transfer case for improved shift on the fly 4WD capability.
WJ axles and brakes to handle the added power and enhance stopping performance.
Custom driveshafts to adapt the modern drivetrain to the CJ8’s chassis.
Wiring & Electronics: Full WJ Integration

One of the most ambitious aspects of the build is integrating the complete 2004 WJ wiring harness into the CJ8. This includes:
Full power distribution and PCM integration for modern engine management.
WJ gauge cluster and dashboard for a factory-style modern cockpit.
Power seats, power windows, and power locks for improved comfort and usability.
Interior and exterior lighting from the WJ for better visibility and a refined look.
Modern ABS and body sensors for enhanced safety and reliability.
WJ steering column, Airbag, cruise control, and multifunction switches for modern drivability.
This approach will make the CJ8 feel like a factory-built modern Jeep while maintaining its iconic body-on-frame design.

Frame & Chassis Restoration

The first step in the build will be to completely remove the CJ8 body from the frame, allowing for full restoration and reinforcement. The frame will be:
Sandblasted to remove rust and old paint.
Repaired and reinforced where necessary.
Coated with rust prevention and chassis paint for long-term durability.
After the frame is restored, the wiring harness will be installed before moving forward with drivetrain and suspension installation.

Final Vision: A Modernized Classic Jeep

Once completed, this CJ8 resto-mod will have the heart and brains of a modern Jeep while retaining the rugged styling and off-road capability of the original Scrambler. It will feature:
-A powerful, fuel-injected stroker engine.
-Modern creature comforts (power accessories, climate control, premium interior).
-Improved safety and drivability with ABS, better brakes, and refined handling.
-A strong, rust-free chassis that will last for years to come.

I hope this will be safe for my daughter and a one-of-a-kind classic Jeep with a lot the functionality of a more modern WJ, making it an incredibly capable, reliable, and unique off-road machine, for Ava's 16th birthday.  still 2.5 years away Not sure that will be enough time.

I once owned an '83 scrambler. It was absolutely my most favorite vehicle I've ever owned. If I still owned it, I'd look for ways to upgrade the 4.2 with an EFI and maybe fit a stronger 5-speed. I like the 4.7 stroker, though!

Heres the CJ8 as it sits now. The before picture. Four Chrome wheels in the back, along with the soft top and soft doors.
