Back in the day, MegaSquirt was the go-to budget stand-alone ECU for EFI retrofit. Over time, engines became more complex rendering the original Mega-squirt outdated. Newer versions are much more expensive. I have a '95 ZJ with a 4.6 high compression (10.2:1) stroker that would detonate even with premium fuel (91 octane is the best I can get around here). After much research, I found www.rusEFI.com which is today's version of what the original MegaSquirt was in it's heyday.
I ordered the UAEFI (Ultra-Affordable EFI) unit which covers up to 6 cylinders. My plan of attack is to start with just controlling ignition, add IAC, then fuel injectors with the stock NB O2, then eventually switch to a WB O2 for extended AFR range. The price is around $200 US, which makes it cheaper than most MegaSquirt options! Furthermore, it is a MODERN ECU with 6 injector drivers, 6 coil drivers, DBW capable, built-in WB-O2 controller, VVT, with many other I/Os for other features.

Re: Budget Stand-Alone ECU
Interesting stuff Mike
Seems like a lot of good features for the price.
I'm currently running a Microsquirt on an HO 4.0 and had to swap to a Renix flywheel to get a supported tooth pattern. Looks like you were able to get the HO tooth pattern working in the RusEFI.
The support for 6 injectors and 6 coils is nice as well.
Will definitely be keeping an eye on this as an option for future builds!

Re: Budget Stand-Alone ECU
I forgot to mention that the rusEFI products are tuned with Tuner Studio -- the same tuning software used for MegaSquirt and AmpEFI products (the DIYAutoTune.com products).
