Replacement for a 2.5l in a 1997 TJ

Hi, I’m not a mechanic so if my question seems overly simple keep that in mind. I’m looking for something with more power than the current engine. I’d like something that’s a drop in and doesn’t require a transmission change.

What are your suggestions?

Unless you do simple bolt ons such as a cold air kit, larger throttle body, header, and exhaust to add a bit more power to your existing engine, any other choice IS going to require a transmission change because you'd be adding significantly more power. You could do the following:

1. Custom turbo or supercharger kit for your 2.5.
2. Swap in a different AMC engine e.g. standard Jeep 4.0, bored/stroked 4.6/4.7 Jeep I6.
3. Go balls out with 6.4 Hemi or 6.2 Hellcat swap.
