Hello all,

I have a 99 complete jeep xj engine and I need some help on what steps need to be taken, as to see if this can be built up.

I pulled the engine after finding some pretty sizeable main bearing flakes. The crank isn't pretty, funny thing was she ran great before I learned this.

Anyway, if there's any information out there you all could point me to, on what I need to do to see if this block can be built I would appreciate it.

Take your block to a local machine shop and have it assessed.

Ok,
What do they need to check?
And will it matter if I pulled pistons/crank/ head for ease of transport?

Won't matter unless you wanted to pay them to take it apart. :D

Just pull the engine apart and take the bare block with main caps and bolts.

i contacted a local shop and asked for a qoute on:
. Checking the block/head
. Hot tanking
. machine work cost for boring and decking.
. cam bearing install
. valve and springs install
. balancing

on top of this they suggested pressure testing the head and if i recondition rods 1100$


does this seem high?

If I’m understanding you correctly you’re getting back a block fully machine with cam bearings in it, rebuilt cylinder head With a balanced rotating assembly for $1100.00?
That pricing seems fair and reasonable.
It’s worth having your machine shop recondition your rods and for about $60.00 extra have them put in a set of new ARP rod bolts part number 146-3601
You’ll also need to make sure they hang a Pistons on the Rods for you since their pressfit. Also make sure they test fit the camshaft in your block to make sure it turns freely before you bring it home.

The cylinder head casting on your engine should be a 0630.
Unlike the early 0331 head introduced a year after yours it had some cracking issues for the first couple years. Unless you’ve had any abnormal heating issues, A simple clean and magna flux should suffice.

yes the voicemail stated 1,196$ for the above ball park list of jargen I gave them. I have reached out to another shop, their web pages prices seems higher. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the full cost of this stroker idea. You are correct the head is 0630 casting.

The engine never overheated, but say three years ago it was hydro-locked, oil changed 3 times in short intervals and I carried on driving it. It was running flawlessly, two years later I pulled the pan to replace a leaky RMS and found a horror story of bearing Shavings in the bottom. Had I not done this job there were no symptoms yet.
The bearings have not spun on either the crank or the rods, they arent pretty though, nor is the crankshaft. I swapped in a "rebuilt" 4.0 92 block 95 head (7120) and bolted on a header with all the 99 hardware and bosh 4hole injectors. Theres a knock thats always been there, over a year, and hasnt gotten worse. Ive read its normal, and Ive read its going to grenade at any given moment lol. Either way its always a gut kicking thought. Shes my only wheels and the perspective of putting money back into just a 4.0 doesnt seem right. Shes got big shoes and 4.56 gears. So what seems to be a potential answer, if there is a problem with my current motor, is sitting in the corner.

My 99 has been sitting on my engine stand in the corner of the garage just awaiting a fate. Here I am with a million questions and an overwhelming amount of info on this site. Great stuff though. So my first baby step is getting this engine torn down again, and seeing if theres any reason it cant be used. Hense the first what are they looking for question.

anyone know how much just the 4.0 short block weighs with everything removed? ive since gotten rid of a hoist.

A bare 4.0 block with main caps and bolts weighs 136lb.

ok good, ill be able to pick it up.

not so good. pulled everything apart other than the crank, pretty certain rod bearings had spun. looks to be chordwise marks on the caps.

looking around at stroker kits, saw a clegg kit posted from another user. why do these kits not include camshafts?

Because it's easy enough to order a camshaft, lifters, and valve springs separately.

Use be happy to once I understand what I need to ask for.

I haven't a clue how to pair any of this, if I need the head rebuild.....
I've seen the calculator dealy but I have much to learn.

4.7L sounds nice,

So does 4000$ or under. Is this a pipe dream price?

My average kit with a ported head is in the $3500.00 to $3800.00

So you’re pretty realistic on what a premium Stroker Kit will cost and should expect 300HP 350TQ without a tune.
