Scat Crank Questions

Post by SatiricalHen »

I have a scat crank and it has some serious knurling on it. I was wondering if anyone else has also used a scat crank. The rear main area on both of my other stock crankshafts have no knurling. So the main questions part. Has anyone else had issues with the rear main leaking with a scat crank? Should I use something other than the felpro rear main seal? I don't have 1000 miles on this oil change and I just had to add 3/4 quart almost. I need to do something about it sooner rather than later.

Scat Cranks will have a knurled surface as does the factory crank. I’ve had some of their Cranks where I’ve had to lean on the polishing belt a little harder.

What the??? That will chew up a seal. I have 2 12 weight cranks and they don’t look like that.

Scat’s neural on there Crankshaft can be aggressive compared to the OEM 4.2/258 crank that sometimes even hard to detect.

As long as it has a good surface polished finish on it I’ve never had a problem.
That’s one of the reasons when I ship my Scat Cranks I suggest to my customers to allow me to spin up and balance the crankshaft and then re-polish with extra love given to the rear main seal area. : )

The crank is in the motor and the rear main appears to be leaking, but I'm not going to rule out the possibility that it may be the corners of the oil pan near the rear main as its hard to view between the trans and motor. What would ya'll suggest? Install another rear main and make sure to put a healthy dab of RTV in the pan gasket corners, or do I need to pull the crank out and have it polished down more?

At this point I see no harm in dropping the oil pan and trying another rear main seal.

Give it a good dose of brake clean to make sure it’s clean and oil free. A modest amount of silicone at the main cap parting line and include the factory metal strap.

Keep us posted and good luck.

Mine was the same way. I haven't put the engine in the Jeep yet; I will be pissed if it leaks. I didn't see anything like that on the factory crank that came out.

I've never seen anything like that, and I can't understand why any crank manufacturer would knurl a sealing surface. If its not smooth I wouldn't count on it sealing.

From what I gather, it used to be common prior to the advent of modern rubber seals.

I haven’t driven the Jeep in almost 2 months now, but I believe the fairly new PCV in the valve cover may have been clogged already. I did something stupid to realize this. I topped the oil off, and forgot to put the cap back on tight, well with the cap loose, eventually falling off there were zero leaks. I put in new PCV and CCV in the valve cover and the 30 miles or so I drove it since then it didn’t leak. Once it get more miles I’ll be sure to update more.

The factory metal strap seems to be unobtainium these days.

I have several if you’re not able to obtain one.

Thanks. I have a couple of used ones here; I was just not able to find any new in stock anywhere. One place I tried to order from said Mopar was backordered until sometime this summer at the earliest.
