Hi all, first post. Starting to gather parts for a stroker. I found this AMC 6 cyl but not sure of the engine size or year. The number on the side of the block says 402A19. Is this a 258? The owner doesn't know and I can't tell from the research I've done so far. Could it be a 199 or some other engine?
First of many questions, I'm sure.
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Is this a 258?
402A19 should translate to 1971, February, 258CI, 19th day.
If the bellhousing is still on it the starter position will tell if its a 199 (starter on the left side under the manifolds), or a 258 (starter on the right side low by the oil pan).

You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

It doesn't have a bell housing, but maybe you can tell from this shot where the starter mounts? to me it kinda looks like under the intake/exhaust.

If that's indeed a '71 block, the crank might only be suitable for an automatic transmission. The cranks changed to a different casting in '72.dan10101 wrote:Well I guess I'm starting a stroker build!

Re: Is this a 258?
The Crank FAQ states the torqueflight needs an adapter to this crank. (71 258 12 counterweight).
It doesn't mention the AW4 that my 98 XJ uses. Anyone know if there is an adapter needed for this auto?

This is a old post, but yes it'll bolt up in front of your AW4.
Because of the 2.500 long snout you will need a spacer.
I sell my billet aluminum spacer cut for a keyway for $35.00
