ATI Super Damper CPS mod

Post by beiwulf »

Good day all, I'm starting this thread with hopes to get some experienced voices chiming in with some ideas for this modification. The ATI Super Damper has the ability to attached a trigger wheel or another pulley to the front of it. I'm curious to what items one might use to do this modification. I talked with one of the engineers at HESCO and he let me know that there sensor is only run with the stock Harmonic Damper. He did mention possible trigger wheel from electromotive and there sensor setup. I will be doing some more research on the subject and figure I would toss it out for the group here. Kick it around and throw some stuff up that should be considered for this mod. :?:

Seems that I could essentially take the Flywheel/Flexplate setup put it in a computer design application (cad, solidworks) and bring the points down to a scale for mounting in-front of damper. Per talking with Uvo (i think his name) over at Electromotive giving insight on this. 1/8 inch thick ferrous material (needs to be magnetic) would do the trick and machine the slots. Next would be to fabricate a bracket to hold the stock sensor.

Anyone ever done this and have a digital file with points for the hall sensor on our jeeps already?

In my search from talking with Hesco (2 separate times), Electromotive, and back to talk with ATI (i figured it's there super damper i bought they might know) - found out that ATI can and does offer even more customization to their Damper. They can do a setup for a CPS off the front of the engine on their Outer housing for the Super Damper. Just need to find out the points/gapping/algorithm.

cost for CPS machined ATI housing $200-250 (quote for custom pc)
samples on ATI webpage
3/4 down page http://www.atiracing.com/products/dampe ... /index.htm

So total cost for the ATI Super Damper custom made with CPS slots machined about $1k (ouch)

The Jeep 4.0L flywheel has three sets of four timing notches located at 120° intervals on the flywheel.

Each set of four notches creates four magnetic pulses in the CKP sensor to indicate each cylinder position.

Random thoughts. The ATI you quote at 1000. How much is the Hesco ? Would the net value be say 700 ? Is the ATI coming with brackets and the sensor itself ? The ATI has its place in our builds.

Why do you want to do this mod and not use the stock Jeep flywheel/flex plate?

Have thought the same thing.

Understand the ATI advantage but unless running OBD1 SBEC and the need/want to change timing why bother ? In fact, as Chris has pointed out the CKP can be modded for timing changes for both SBEC and JTEC.

Then with JTEC and a good tuner like Hogan the cal is going to have the timing changed within the cal anyways.

I'm doing an OBDII conversion and my understanding is that the computer requires CKP sensor signal in order to run the engine. Since I have a 4.2 crank going in and want to run the flex plate for it. To boot the inconvenience of having the CKP sensor on the trans bell housing is just a pita for service. So a few reasons for wanting to relocate this.

The quote based on Chris's ATI super damper being $700 range plus another 200-250 for the CKP mod. Yes, it puts it in the $1,000 range for the ATI damper setup.

IIRC hesco is selling there Damper with CKP sensor relocation in the $300 dollar range.

Those guys at Hesco are tight lipped and don't like to play with the other kids on the playground.

Well ATI said "We are on a custom freeze currently" ---

Soooo they aren't taking any custom orders for anything. The housing is entirely machined aluminum and going to figure out someway with my machinist to make something work.

sample pic of stock HB with CKP sensor relocation.

ATI wheel with face attachment.

So machining an attachment to the front and ATI logo probably won't show as well or at all….

Flexplate sample pic I grabbed from a quick search on google pic from a member over on NAXJA forum.

So magnetic pick up sensor… Not magnetic flywheel/flexplate/HB. Material used needs to be ferrous for magnet to sense.
Unlike quite a few other engines i guess ( :? - don't know much about other engines just yet)
Not just v8's but bmw has there inline 6
Link to a 60-2 tooth setup for cps (not sure if that is exactly what bmw uses but it's a sample)
