Sea Level Question

In the "FAQ" section there is a thread called "Compression Rate FAQ". In this thread the author stated "...if you live at sea level you will not be happy with a simple stroker as it will not run on anything but premium fuel.........and maybe not even then".

I live at sea level and I was looking at building a stroker, but now I'm not even sure if I can.

Is there a stroker build more suitable for someone living at sea level???

I just built my 4.7 and it ran without issue at sea level on premium. I didnt try anything else, but then again i designed the engine to run on premium only with a DCR of 8.56.

Are you against premium fuel usage?

If your worried about it make sure you have 0 deck height and a tight quench. Then design the engine to be about 8 DCR to be safe... but should be good up to 8.4ish. 8.5+ is pushing it and is a crapshoot weither or not you can get away with running premium.

I personally dont see what the big deal is with running premium. it ends up being only about 4-5 bucks more per tank...

I run mine on 91 octane when it's 90+*F outside, 87 octane in cooler weather, and that's at sea level with the hottest RC12LYC plugs.

I had a "simple stroker" with 13.5cc(iirc)pistons, a .0760 quench and a comp cam 68-231-4. SCD was 9.83 and DCR was 8.42. It would only run premium w/o pinging. While I am not at sea level I am close to it. It didn't care for midgrade but it was happy on premium.

With those compression numbers I'm not surprised that you need premium. My "poor man's" stroker SCR is 9.25 and the DCR is 7.36, which is why it'll run on lower octane fuel in cooler weather at sea level without pinging.
