Some crook got my credit card number

Post by seanyb505 »

I found out I was over my limit while buying gas tonight (17 mpg for the stroker on this tank  ). Went home and looked and someone had jacked my number somewhere and started buying stuff. They didnt get very far cause I was so close to my spending limit anyway lol. Chase immediately cancelled my account and said they would investigate it, and I shouldnt be liable for the charges made. I know i dont have to pay for it, but it really really irks me that this person will probly get away with it. Insert angry expletives here.
Now I can be like all those other awesome people with more than one Jeep in their sig, but now I have to say one of them is sold:(

Been there!!! Last time someone in Texas bought $600 in car audio equiptment at Walmart using a fake copy of one of my Illinois checks. Tracked it to the Walmart store, called them and they couldn't help me at all. They don't keep a copy of the check, they hand it back to you. So let's see, it was in Texas, the person gave a Texas drivers license, and the checking account is in IL and no one thought to question it. Not Walmart, not the check verification company, and not my bank. I have no idea what name was on the check or if the person even used or knew my name. Luckily, I was looking at my account online the Monday after the weekend it happened and asked my wife what's this $600 at Walmart. Called the bank BEFORE they actually released the funds. Since the money wasn't actually gone, they could stop the payment, otherwise I would've had to dispute it. That would have taken a at least a couple days.

Good thing I'm not bitter or hold a grudge.

Yeah Im just glad I dont have to pay for any of it. I dont even have a person to hold a grudge to. Ive debated doing my own detective work and going to the places they went, explaining my situation, and asking to see some video tapes the minute the transactions occured. Then finding the person and at least asking them how they got my number so I could avoid doing the same thing. Apparently they were using it in West Palm Beach where I live. Im just afraid I might get shot or something stupid around here.

It could be as simple as a waiter/waitress (or any other person you give your card to, especially if it leaves your sight, i.e. the waitress) with a little card reader that stores the number. I remember when most people put their social insecurity # on their drivers license, not recommended now.

not just credit cards!! my boss lost about 10,500 cdn last year in quebec, CAN. had no idea, used a debit machine, apparently it was the wrong one. happened to alot of people and the authorities narrowed down the machine and stopped it, but no one was ever found.
again, this time closer to home, two good friends of mine were out at a local bar for halloween, and their cards both got copied, as well as MANY others. only one of them got jacked though, 500 cash pulled at a different bank machine. she caught it about 5 days later, and her bank had already recieved numerous complaints about bank machine theft.

This is why I use a credit card over a debit card, there is typically more buyer protection when using a credit card. I bought a pair of boots from an online store and when I got them their "size 11.5" was at least 1 size smaller according to every other pair of shoes and boots I own. It also looked like they had been worn for a while and returned once before. The company told me that I was responsible for the return shipping, close to 20 bucks. When I informed my credit card company they credited me the 20 bucks and only paid them 150 of the 170 they should have gotten.
After that I went for Red Wings and have not regretted it.
When I was pre ordering my 05 speed angel (paintball marker) the bill was about 1100 the card was rejected the first time and the phone rang about 30 seconds later. It was the credit card company calling to check if I was actually making that purchase. The lady on the phone said items like that get flagged because its the type of item a kid would buy with a stolen card.

Someone got a hold of the shop's credit card number and had $15,000 USD of merchandise drop shipped to some place in Indonesia. I don't think the person who made the purchase was found.

So far Chase has been cool about it. No questions, they just asked for a cutoff date and said it was cancelled and I wouldnt be liable for the fraudulent purchases.

I'm going by memory here so beat me up if I'm wrong, but I believe you are only legally responsible for the first $50 of fraudulent charges on a credit card. I'm not sure if it's $500 or no legal protection on a debit card. That being said most debit/check card companies claim they will only charge the $50 like the credit cards. Two problems there, 1. They aren't legally obligated to only charge you the first $50, and 2. Money stolen from a credit card is just that CREDIT. How do you pay your mortgage when some @$$HOLE empty's your bank account? Man, I'd like to get a hold of the guys who got me. :smack:
