What other vehicles have you owned?

Post by SilverXJ »

As teh topic says, what else have you owned?

Me:

1974 Jaguar XJ12C. Weird history behind this car. It was the first XJC in the US, and #13 off the line. From what I have found it was sold in the Netherlands and imported as a grey market car. I found a pencil with German writing on it under the rear seat when I was taking it apart. Original color was coral exterior (yuck) and black interior. Has the quad Zenith carbs tied to the 5.3L V12. Probably the only car that I can say I have been completely comfortable in. I haven't driven it in 10 years as it is due for a restoration. This was the car that I cut my mechanic teeth on.

1964 Ford Mustang. White exterior, white interior with a red carpet. I really didn't care for this car at the time. It had the pathetic I6, leaked when it rained from the roof and cowl, had a shake after 40 mph, no AC, no power anything. Looking back now I had a lot of fun with that car and I do appreciate its looks.

1978 Intermecchanica Italia. Didn't have this car for long, and I actually didn't actually own it, but drove it for a while. Aluminum Italian body with a Ford drive train. Light weight with a big engine... it flew... but the front bushings were shot and made for an interesting experience (try finding bushings is nearly impossible). No AC no heat. Heat wasn't a problem at the time.. try driving a small coupe with a large V8 in the middle of a Louisiana summer.. oh.. and it was a hard top. Tip: don't drive it to a job interview.

1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited. Probably by far the most reliable car I have ever had. Took a beating on Louisiana streets and kept ticking. Bought it from my mom, and I remember when she purchased it... it was the first vehicle I had seem with keyless entry and that is probably why I remember the purchase. Not a single problem with this vehicle during the time I owned it. It was totaled at 11 years old and 200,000 mile.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I would have to say absolutely the worst vehicle I have ever had. Incurable death wobble, bad AC system, and the final straw was when it randomly wouldn't start. The only redeeming quality was that it had the AW4.

2000 Jeep Cherokee Limited. My current vehicle. Searched 9 month for this particular XJ (I wanted a silver limited). Purchased it sight unseen from NJ (my father's friend took a loot at it for me though). First vehicle I really modified. In hind sight I should have gone with a 1999 though. Probably going to be one for keeping along side the XJ12C. Its not special or anything, but with teh effort and money I have in it it wouldn't be worth to sell.

Maybe we should state our age so it gives some kind of idea of a general timeline? I dunno. Anyway

I am age 27.

1989 Chevy S-10 Blazer: This was my first vehicle. I purchased it about 3 months before actually having my full license. So it sat in the backyard for awhile. Being in highschool, i was obsessed with loud car stereo's (still kinda am actually). I built 3 different custom speaker boxes that took up the entire rear from the rear seat to the tailgate. I had 4 - 12" woofers, and an amplifier that was measured to peak around 2200 watts. The demise of this vehicle was it had some electrical issues that made it run very, VERY poorly. Chevy's "throttle body injection" was an awful design (much like jeeps Carter carb).

2000 Honda Civic SI: I was in need of a new vehicle, and was looking for something small, light, and quick. Something that i could modify into a "unique" car. I bought this car and started changing around body kits, wheels, lowering, engine mods, ETC ETC, all before "The Fast and The Furious" came to theaters. So people gave me a hard time after the movie, claiming i was trying to model my car like the movie. I started a major engine building project which ended shortly after i realized it would cost me over $10,000 to run the setup i wanted.

1987 Jeep Wrangler: I am the fourth owner of this vehicle. I wanted a 4wd vehicle to drive in the winter time when it was snowing, as my Honda Civic was a mear 3" off of the ground. I bought it off of my cousin for $2000. Fortunately for me, my cousin was a neat freak, and took very good care of it while he owned it. I am fanatical about my cars, but when one goes 4 wheeling in the woods, scratches and rust are just BOUND to show up sooner or later! This is the obvious receiver of my recently built and installed stroker. (check project thread)

2008 Altima Coupe: First year Nissan released a Coupe version of the Altima. I saw it on the internet about a month after it was released, and fell in love. I was to the point where i didn't like driving my "modified" civic anymore, and i regreted what it had become. So i decided for my first new car, i'd option it out. The car is just over a year old, and it has just 10K miles on it. I tried to resist the modification itch, but it was bound to happen. I put a mellow cat back exhaust system on it, which made it sound nice and sporty and is at a perfect volume (not loud and over bearing). And the windows are tinted. The most i decided i might EVER do to this car, is an ECU upgrade to try and bump the factory 270 horses.

ive had my liscence for......almost 7 years. this is my list

1984 hyundai pony - not very reliable, didnt even make it onto the road legally to be driven. cracked head, and "someone" didnt know enough about cars to figure that one out. he also didnt know to have it inspected before dropping the cashola :smack:

1980 amc spirit - my next one, my "mini muscle car". great fun, pretty fast. will be faster once it gets the stroker im building!!

1979 amc spirit - the first one was so much fun, i wanted another. this one ended up being a parts car after developing frame rust

1992 chev corsica (x2) - bought the first for the girlfriend at the time. bought the second for parts, made a buttload of cash off of it

1988 honda accord - bought this for cheap transport. girlfriend above made off with it after a nasty breakup. didnt hurt my feelings, it died soon after from neglect.

1986 daytona turbo z - picked this up, blew up a half shaft, found out too quick i could spend 2000 bucks to start the build on it. decided one project was enough, sold it soon after. blast to drive, fast little machine.

1992 jeep cherokee laredo - again, awesome ride, blast to offroad in, love the little hill climbs locally i got in. turned into yet another project, got in the way of the car, and was a little too painful at the pump.

1989 honda accord - had good luck with my first one, picked it up for cheap driving. daily driver currently.

22, had my liscence for 6 yrs.

1983 Vovlo 240GL: Hand-me-down from older sister. Beige ext, beige cloth interior. Quote from a friend I was following in a Miata - "Ive never seen so much body roll from a car without tipping over." Two weeks into having my liscence I went around a corner too fast and the back stepped out. It straightened itself out and went straight into a cement coulvert. Car was totaled.

1987 Honda Accord: Bought this one for $400 with a salvagable title. It had only been rear ended, so the fix was easy. Lot of fun to screw around with in highschool, until I hit a curb going about 35. Bent the frame and some other stuff. Still screwed around with it, still drove the crap out of it, eventually developed an oil leak. I knew the car's time had come, so we beat it up inside my neighborhood. Starting it in gear, turning it off at 40, putting it in first and letting the clutch out. The engine finally threw a rod on the way to the junkyard. It was towed the rest of the way by the Jeep I have now.

1986 Pontiac Fiero: I bought this for $700 to replace the Honda. I was excited to have a mid-engined "sports" car, but there were too many mechanical issues to be a reliable driver. I eventually sold it for a $500 dollar loss. The guy who bought it later told me he just threw a clutch on and it ran just fine.

1997 Jeep Cherokee: This was my Dad's car and the car I learned to drive on when I got my permit. When I graduated he moved to Canada and I took over payments on the Jeep. As my history tells Im more into cars, so I went about in making this more car-like. It was only 2wd and everytime I went offroad I got stuck. Its light and a lot of fun to drive. Especially after becoming the recipient to the 4.6 :D

Next: Id like to get a Commander when I graduate, but I think the money would be better spent in saving for a Plymouth Duster or a Factory Five Cobra Replica.
Now I can be like all those other awesome people with more than one Jeep in their sig, but now I have to say one of them is sold:(

Got my license in '86.
#1- Metallic Green '77 dodge 3/4 ton van. Nearly indestructible with the 318, topped out at an indicated 112. Dad sold it when the 2nd trans showed signs of doom.

#2- '73 Mercury Montego station wagon. 8000 miles on 400 cubes, burned a quart of oil every 75 miles, put out a military grade smoke screen. Actually slowed down at full throttle as the blow-by increased on cylinder #1. 19 feet 7 inches bumper to bumper, Urine yellow/green (literally- not a joke). I didn't know how good the van was.

#3- Blue '73 Chevy 3/4 ton p/u, "trailering special" w/454, 335 horses from the factory. Smoked 1 tire all the way to 105 mph darn quick. Bought it on a Friday, rolled and totaled on Sunday.

The rest- '84 Buick Regal (totaled after 6 weeks), '89 Ford 4wd Lariat p/u, '91 Suzuki Samurai, '94 Mustang GT, '86 Buick Somerset, '88 Pontiac Grand Am, '97 Kia Sportage, '00 Isuzu Trooper, '99 Miata.

My newest is actually a '54 Ford f600 fire pumper I'm 9/10th through restoring.
I NEED MORE TORQUE!

'03 Rubicon w/4.6: kb944 pistons, late 70's 4 weight crank, Mopar P4529228ab cam, 240 dur./.430 lift, barely polished head. First fire 11/14/08, no mechanical issues so far.

My first car was a mustard 76 nova with the 305(non SS). My dad and I were going to rebuild the engine, then one of my friend's bosses was selling a wine 88 2dr 2wd 4.0 ba10 cherokee. I bought it for $1500 and we had the nova towed away(my heart really wasn't into it, maybe if it was an earlier ss). Slow-rolled the cherokee on its roof in a parking lot doing a reverse 180 @20mph(what looked like loose gravel was just a rough paved surface). Had to use a floor jack and a 4x4" on the a-pilar to get it back in place to put a windshield in. Months later I t-boned(would've been me t-boned if I was a slit second faster) an escort that ran a redlight. The escort went airborn hit a telephone pole and then a parked car. I checked up on the guy and he said he was ok. I knew my Jeep was totalled so I started taking out the $1000+ stereo system that wouldn't last a night in a wrecker yard. Meanwhile the other guy flees the scene on foot. Turns out his ass was drunk and it was his friend's escort. I'm glad I get $1400 out of the crash as the Jeep wasn't the same after rolling it.
I was given a mid-80s accord w/ a 5-speed that blew a chunk out of its tranny. I drove the family's early 80's chevette for a while.
Then one friend's dad had a 84 corolla hatchback 5-speed that had been sitting in the driveway for some years. I could have it if I got it working. I took off the carb and cleaned it and drove it home. It was a fun car to drive--esp in the wet or snow, as it was rwd--it just needed some more power.
92 2dr 2wd Cherokee w/ 4.0 and ax15 for $2k, same wine color(the 1st one's reincarnation!). Bought it w/ 142K, drove it to 277K, sold it to bro's friend, he drove it to 295K then sold it, and I think it can't pass a md inspection now. I was gonna use the engine for the stroker, but couldn't deny it hitting 300K.
94 2dr 2wd Cherokee w/ 4.0 and ax15 for $2200. Beautiful gray metallic. I maxed it out with boltons. Very fast(faster than 96 w/ same boltons). Go too fast entering parkway, get over too early and fishtail on loose debris at 75mph. Facing guardrail to the right, overcorrect the steering wheel to the left and when the tires decide they want to grip, the Jeep begins rolling passenger side. Rolls 2.5 times over the left guardrail and into the big grassy median.
96 green 2dr 2wd XJ w/ 4.0 ax15 66K for $1200. Used the 94 block to make stroker. Stroker is 10:1 SCR, 8.5DCR, mopar 30ab cam, long snout 4-weight crank, Sealed Power 825cp30 pistons, ported and polished head, Borla header and cat-back, ported 99+intake, LT1 injectors, 62mm tb, Split Second psc1 fmu, Jet2 chip, K&N fipk w/ amsoil 3090 filter. Other mods: auburn lsd w/ 3.55 gears, zj rear discs, bilstein shocks, Addco swaybars, custom 2" lower springs(springworks), mech fan delete and 2nd stock e-fan added, hurst shifter, 255/60/15 Yokohamas, and probably more.
I'll try to find a 95 avus blue m3 this spring--been wanting it for almost 15 years now. It'll be a second car that'll get modded and auto-crossed. I'll probably always have a cherokee.

#1 1967 Dodge D-100 with a bad cam that I never felt like replacing. It was alot of fun to drive in that "maybe i'll fall through the floor boards on the next bump" kind of way. Lots of fun up till I put it into a set of guard rails. I got it running again and fixed up the body but lost interest in it.

#2: 1995 Ford Contour, Seafoam green with a 5 speed. Picked that one up just after I crashed the dodge screwing around in the snow. I beat the balls off that little car and it just kept on going. Didn't have a speedometer for about a year and it never had a tach so I just drove by feel and shifted by sound (rev limiter). Did a timing belt on it and I think it was off a tooth on the exhaust cam cause it sounded like It had a fart can on it after I was done. got $300 for it when I sold it and the next owner put it into the guard rails within 2 weeks of buying it.

#3: current DD, 1996 Cherokee. 4 inch lift, 31's, ford 8.8, someday it will have a stroker.

I have owned 2 '89 Sky blue 2-door XJ's, 1 '96 Grand Cherokee, a '98 Durango, and am about to rebuild the motor so I can start driving my sky blue '98 XJ.

BTW, I'm making a lot of headway on the stroker, thanks so much.

My story In chronological order (if I recall correctly):

1986 Lada Niva 1600 4x4 - 1st car, picked it up and never paid for it. Changed the head gasket, trimmed the fenders, made some homemade bumpers and beat on it for a little while. I still have it sitting around, half-demolished.

1995 Lada Niva 1.9D 4x4 - Bought it for cheap from a junkyard with the condition that I was gonna return the body. Used one weekend to completely strip everything and store it in cardboard boxes. Sold the drivetrain and majority of parts later on.

1982 Lada Niva 1600 4x4 - I was given this as a birthday gift from my uncle. Was supposed to make a roll cage and prepare it for competition. Never got to it, it's still sitting around and is operable (with parts used from the '86).

1986 Jeep Cherokee 2.5L Chief 2-door – The introduction to Jeeps. This one took us around for many years, and was severely beat on and off the road. Without a single straight body panel, 230K miles on the clock, and nowhere to store it was destined for the junkyard. Alas.

1983 Saab 900 Turbo – Got this one for free. Raced it around for a little while, but it also became stagnant. Sold it recently.

1994 Ssang Yong Korando K4 4x4 (CJ-7 look-a-like w/ Isuzu diesel) – Long story short: Traded it for the ’86 XJ, used it for a while, bought the XJ back, and sold this one.

1989 Ssang Yong Korando K9 4x4 (CJ-8 look-a-like w/ Isuzu diesel) - Same story with the ’94 Korando applies, only this thing didn't have a motor and was left untouched.

1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0L 4-door - Fully loaded. Paid a lot of money for this. Very dependable, until a drunk fool decided to escape the police in it leading to rolling it. It had a lot of goodies and was parted out.

1989 Lancia Thema i.e. V6 - A car that had been in the family for long. My aunt gave it to me when the tranny gave up the ghost. I sold it on for a profit.

1984 Land Rover 109 County V8 - Was given this by a friend that was fed up. This is a future project.

1988 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L 2-door - Searched down an XJ with 2-door, 4.0 and 5spd. Got it for a song. Currently undergoing major rust surgery. To be continued!

199? Nissan Primera 2.0 - POS.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2 - 318/46RH/242. Daily-driver and boat hauler.
'86 XJ - 150/AX5/207 - RIP
'91 XJ - 242/AW4/242 - RIP
'88 XJ - 242/BA10/231
'93 ZJ - 318/46RH/242
