This will make you laugh

Post by akadeutsch »

Ok this started off as a stripped out lug. The lug nuts that they used on my heep have a chrome cover on them. I am sure that some of you are aware of these stupid things. When this cover (inevitably) falls off it is necessary to use a size smaller socket (18mm) to remove the lug as the 19mm is now too loose. Well, :smack: My dumb *** used the larger 19mm socket to try and loosen a lug nut without the cover. And in doing so I rounded the lug nut. I then pounded a 17mm socket on and tried that. My first mistake was using the wrong sized socket. My second mistake was to try and use an impact gun on an already mis-shaped lug nut. This made my problem way worse. Now, by this time I was looking at "most" of a lug nut that had been completely rounded off. So, How does one remove this busted POS? Well,I started with an air hammer removing as much of the lug and stud as i could. Then I used a tool that resembled an inside-out easy out. I was able to get a good hold on what was left of the lug and stud so I applied force..then more force...then a 500 foot pound gun. Whammy. I busted off a large chunk of whatever was left but it was not enough to free my wheel. You can see what I have left in the picture. I have started drilling out the stud...another 1/2 inch and I'll be home free with only a stud to replace. What a nightmare

Is that a crack in the wheel spoke on the right?

Land Rover Discovery has the same stupid 'hubcaps' on the wheel lug nuts.

I don't know if you tried this, but when i have a lug that is un-budgeable, I re-tighten all of the other ones real tight, and then loosen the one that was stuck, first. It usually comes out much easier. With your limited grip on the nut, it needs all the help it can get. It also helps to put a little oil on the ones that are loose first so you can really crank down on them (and they come back out easier).

All it took was a nice set of good drill bits.
