Excel sheet: speed vs. gear ratios vs. tire size

Post by seanyb505 »

Im fairly confident this has been done before but I know a couple guys on a different forum were asking questions about it. What happens to rpms when you regear for performance? How much shorter are gears? So I spent the last couple hours figuring the formulas that include transmission gear ratio (I used an ax-15, but it too, can be changed), final drive ratio and tire size to either determine speed or rpm, based on input. I also made it able to compare two different inputs, like 3.07s compared to 3.55s, or 215/70/15s compared to 235/75/15s. All of the cells are able to be changed, but the important ones are the three numbers for tire size, final drive, Speed and rpm. Two tire sizes can be compared at once, as well as two different final drive ratios. Entering a speed in the yellow box will give you what the rpm will be in all gears, depending on tire sizes and final drives. Entering an rpm in the yellow will give you the speed in each gear, also depending on tire sizes and final drives. There arent any limits, so entering 5250 rpm will give you 150+ in fifth gear, and entering 100 mph will give you motorcycle-like rpm ranges in first. I dont know how to make it usable here on the forum, so if you want it I can email it to you.

Sean, been playing around with you cal. Work real good..........Unless you try put a tire size in thats not metric(33/11.50/15)

It don't like then numbers much, and cause that column to quit working.........even if you put the original 225/75/16 back in it.
As long as i X out of the program, with out, saving my work, it works just fine the next time i open it.

Is it possible to add another line, that would except standard tire sizes?

I'm using Open Office Org.2.3 to run the program.
It seam to work flawlessly as long as i only us metric numbers
Standard tire size can be figured out using the metric numbers......So I'm still having a good time with it! :D

Thanks

Ok, I added another field so you can add standard sizes. Since standard sizes have the overall height right in, you only need to input the tire height in cell D6 which is gray. As before, the gray corresponds to the gray headed results field which is G17 - J22.

I Vote we put this up with the "Stroker Calculator" so it's easier for every on to find!

Does any one else think we should make this a permanent part of the board?

Id like to add fuel consumption into it somehow. I just havent had time to mess with the injector rates and equations. It would also need to factor in wind, and the most universal way to do that would use the drag coefficent and just use the speed as any wind resistance. If it would be easy to edit once its a part of the board I would say slap her up there. Also I need to list other transmission ratios at the bottom so who ever is using it can input their own transmission, cause I know not everyone has an ax-15.

This is true,. I have a standard so it works just fine for me.............but an auto and a 3sp manual would be good.

Maybe you could have the spec of all the different tranny that came behind a jeep at the bottom. then you could just pic the one you have and replace then with the one's that match your vehicle
Like AX15 and give the gear change ratios(1,2,3,4,5)
AX5 (I think the ratios are the same as teh ax15)
auto......ext.

The problem with the auto is the TQ slip...........but in High gear, the converter "locks up" any ways right???
So it would be accurate in HIGH......and give ya a good comparison in the rest of the gears.
An other this is that, I don't think many people look in this section vary often, and could completely miss the hole subject.

Unfortunatly its not very easy to edit when its converted... so thats a huge factor.

I also think it would be nice to take an auto into consideration. Or maybe have gear ratios of each gear (auto or manual) filled in but editable so that we could use it better, and someone who knew there ratios could also use it to bring more traffic here. Then list the auto and manual gear ratios below all the fields. So if its filled in with the ratios from a auto, and you have a manual, you can easily copy and paste values... make since?

Im not very knowledgeable when it comes to formulas involving autos and such, but yes they can be a general guideline. As for different ratios it would be just that, copy and pasting. Ive noticed on the stroker calc that not all fields are able to be edited, so far in just xls form they are. I also need to figure out how to limit values. Someone has commented that 9900 in first gear was pretty funny lol.
