304 SS exhaust

Post by jasonb »

After I finished building my stroker, I thought it would be best to get all the ancillary projects done ahead of the swap in an effort to save time. First I got the primary wiring reworked to accommodate the 150A alternator that's going in with the motor. That turned into a pain because the HF lug crimper's dies were all the wrong size so they had to be reworked to produce acceptable crimps. Next was the exhaust. I needed an extra bung for the wideband, and since I really wanted to upgrade anyway I decided to fab a new front pipe out of 2 1/2" 304 SS. I spent about a day and a half fitting the pieces, but I'm glad I did because it fit perfectly! Eventually I'll do the rest of the exhaust, but that's a project for another day.

Nice job but may I suggest adding a flex band ?

A flex just before the 90* will help the header from cracking by allowing a bit of movement instead of transferring it to the header itself.

Nice...

Reminds me of when I did my custom bent Hot rod kit exhaust...

Image

I used the ball flange in the kit which was soooo much nicer then just clamping it on...

I didn't use the Flexy joint in my exhaust and I disagree with the suggestion you should have used one but as with everything to each their own...

Everything else for the exhaust is easy after the collector...
this is the start of my tailpipe..
Image

and then remainder of the pipe I made it go out on a 45 rather then the 90 or straight out and with my stroker engine Its loud on the 45 and would be even louder straight out...

I remember reading your original post when you made yours, it was the seed of inspiration for me to do the same. Someday I'll get around to the rest of the system, for now my priority is to get a free weekend to drop my stroker in. I built it last winter and at this rate it will be winter again before it goes in.

BTW, what gas tank is in your rig?

I hear ya, I was building my stroker slowly with no real hurry so that I could just build it the way I wanted it from the start but then blew my stock engine and had to hurry up and finish it still building it the way I wanted but more expensive because I needed the parts like yesterday...

I am running the 23G Dakota tank and sender but started out using the 15G Dakota tank which fits easier then the 23, all I have still to do is build a fuel tank skid which I starter a few weeks ago but haven't had time to get back to

I see. I didn't know that was a thing, but I like it. Is the Durango pump different pressure?

Pressure is determined by the regulator, not the pump.

OK. I'll clarify. I am aware that the regulator sets the pressure. On my Jeep, the regulator is in the tank just above the pump. If I were to do a tank swap I would loose my regulator, and assuming the Dakota regulator is also in the tank (I don't know), gain that regulator. Now, I also don't know what pressure the Dakota runs at so...... my question should have read - Is the Dakota regulator different pressure?

I am also aware that earlier (than my 96) models had the regulator on the fuel rail. I didn't take the time to see what year jeepman's rig is so this could in fact be a moot question anyway.

I apologize for any confusion.

Oh, didn't know the regulator was there. Sorry, wasn't trying to be douchey about it.

My truck is technically a 1989 and originally
the regulator is in the fuel rail but by 97 I
think it was they moved the regulator to the top
Of the sender.

This Dakota tank swap is for MJ's not XJ's

Now since I wanted to have a simpler plug and
play system with the modern pump and tank I
found the 15G Dakota tank to be a near perfect size
match being a pickup truck the tanks a better
match and Polly instead of the old steel tank and impossible to replace MJ sender even though
I built my old MJ sender using a new XJ sender.

I ran the 15G with a 98 XJ sender for about a year
before switching to the 23G tank and the matching
sender because the XJ sender was too short and would read empty when the tank was at about a quarter tank
and I wanted to change the rollover venting as well as the vent tube location.

If I were to do it all over again I would have kept
my MJ tank and modified sender and put in an adjustable
regulator on the fuel rail right where it was factory OBDI instead of switching to the newer Polly tank which is actually the simpler way then I went but I ended up with a tank that's about 5G larger.

Stock MJ was 39 psi and the newer 97+ I converted
to is 49 psi.

As for the Durango pump I don't know for sure about the sender but the pump is likely no different.

No worries, I just wanted to clarify a little.

And jeepman, MJ makes a lot more sense. I didn't see that.
