just the picture. I got the valves all figured out.
After a little thinking. Im going to drop the transmission back down. and pull the TC back off and make sure it seated all the way in.
Im pretty sure the TC was pushing the flywheel.
I know I didnt do it up too tight.
as i tightened i checked the dampener for movement. and when it stopped i stopped and let off the bolts.

Yeah It was the torque converter that was stopping the motor.
Got everything lined up again and it bolted right up.

Just two quick pics.
I made kinda a silly mistake. When I was messing with that torque converter that would not seat for some reason... I got it all together. put the flywheel bolts in.. all the time thinking. wow i don't remember having this much space before.... then right when I tightened the last bolt. and went to grab the next piece from the line of boxes. I see the flywheel cover. and realized my mistake. So out comes the transmission a tad to slide that back in. but other than that. Should be ready for a startup this weekend.
I Still have the AC mount and powersteering mount last to paint. Head got the last coat of white this morning. Edging ever closer to the end of my ""3-4 week project"" haha

Also. Ill check the piston to deck clearance soon so I can figure out the compression ratio and get back with results.

So. I used the head and some feeler gauges to check piston to deck clearance. Its like to 0.020 / 0.021 below the deck. that gives me static 9.95:1 and 8.53:1 dynamic
is that good or bad ?
I know the closer to 10:1 the higher octane fuel it needs.. right ?
one pic before I hooked everything up

Compression ratio, Dynamic Compression, and Octane Knock are some of the most argued topics on car forums. There is a lot of misinformation out there. But your numbers look good. If it was me Id try to run it on 93, then slowly mix in lower grades until you get to 87 or it starts pinging.

Crap. Problem.
So everything is together.
Im spinning the oil pump with a drill clockwise.
and im not seeing oil coming up the pushrods or lifters...
help ?
I know I put the gasket on and know I torqued it correct.

So. After messing with the oil pump. i kept turning over the engine. and i saw oil starting to go up top.
bolted the last few things on.
started her up. for like 2mins
Sounds perfect. except for valve tick. A really bad valve tick.
So I poured oil through the valve cover. and the ticking goes away.

while running I had almost 0 oil pressure it kept trying to go up. but would drop off.

Ideas ?
could be the pump ? its the melling high volume one
other than this what else could it be.

I am running comp cams 10w30 break in oil. (which is surprisingly thin)
Its full to the full line on the dipstick.
Also. on the melling pump there is a bolt holding the pickup in place. and it is installed in my pics. so the tube didn't come off

I have pics of the block before I assembled everything and im not seeing a missing dowel or anything.
+ not a single drop of oil leaked underneath after starting it up for the 2mins.

Did you see if the galley plug behind the timing set is in place?

I checked through all my pics. I don't have one of the front of the timing cover without the cover on. But pretty sure I checked all that.

That link you posted is interesting.
the fact that oil got up to the top in my mind means its gotta be loosing pressure. and that gap would make sense.
hoping i can squeeze that oil pan off without pulling the motor.
I remember before I could not get it off.

I never had a problem getting the oil pan off. With my 3.5" of lift its easy. Jack the front up, jack stands under the body, let the axle hang.

^^^^ This, but on a side note. Running a static compression ratio of something close 10 to 1 with a iron head with no quench is going to be tough to get it to run on pump gas with any ignition timing in it.

I ran 9.9:1 on a POS stroker with 258 rods, 4.0L pistons and a shitty .0760" quench. Using premium, a 12.5:1 WOT air fuel ratio. No pinging.

It ran super smooth. First kick it started.
aside from the ticking.
Oh. Wow was it smooth.
im not worried about it pinging. (there is 91 in there now)
I cant wait to drive her again. just gotta figure out this last bit.

The hard part is removing the oil pan. It hits the axle. I remember from last time. It was awful...

Interesting, that's good to know.
Maybe I'm being too conservative.

im running 9.6 with 5 psi of boost on 93 no problems at all in fact im bumping it to 10 psi soon. it takes a lot for it to ping
