Octane issues. . .

Ran low enough on fuel to sputter. Added gas from cans in back of truck. One gallon had 91 in it but 3? Months old
The other may have had 87 in it and ?? Months old.

I bet together they might have been lucky to be 80 octane.

Anyway I got my first pinging. Didn't even give more than 1/10 throttle and got ping.
Gonna fill with my normal 91 tomorrow.
This does not bode well for my planned cam timing correction.
I initially set retarded or maybe zero-spec not in front of me. I should have set 4' advanced from what it is for more power but now with ping cause of weak gas???? I

Is advancing it a good idea?
Not like I have all the time in the world too. Fun.

Stay tuned.

going to dyno it tomorrow after work.

expecting horrible numbers due solely to my Luddite stubbornness and to my fear of ping.

The Luddite doppleganger forced me to make huge modifications to an 84 carb intake so i could run a carb. (also meant I could keep OEM 727 kickdown bracket system)

And then that same scary dude forced me to actually set the cam up either retarded 4' or straight up when my normal inclination would have been to run 4' advanced to pull torque curve down.

we will see...

I get 3 pulls for $60 and taking a selection of jets from 48-64 to see if it changes anything.

laying bets its gonna be in the ~110hp range under 3500 and ~150tq max. MAYBE 175tq.

What have you got your timing set at? I've been stabbing in the dark for a while and would love to hear what another carb-fed rig is set up at. I'm running around 10* initial, and the vacuum (to manifold vac) is about 25* more, and my mechanical adds abot 10 - 15* more, can't remember exactly. About 45-50* total, and mech. is all in by 2000 rpm. Seems to go good and pull well, idles well, but burbles/skips a ton when deccelerating from higher rpm. Not sure if that's normal. Also wonder if I got too much timing altogether. I have a 231 cam and I just put it in - no degreeing.

Speaking of luddite - I have a renix block/head, offenhauser dualport, and a quadrajet. The red-headed stepchildren of the stroker world!!

Very cool rig you got, and can't wait to see the dyno #'s.

dont remember timing.... its sorta adance till ping then pull it back 2-3 degrees(cant hear ping till its been happening for a while so better safe/sorry)

i really need to break down and buy an adjustable digital timing light so i can measure true degrees.

gonna say im somewhere near teh 8-10' advanced based of measured TDC markings I made when head was off and dial indicator on top of piston...

153 hp
203 tq

thats with 2150 carb in teh 12.99 A/F
nutter bypass HEI ign w/ford TFI coil
rebuilt well but still slipomatic OEM jeep 727 trans
208 transfer case

internet says these things lose 40-60hp front to back and then transfer case losses....

What size exhaust, carb, and what plugs? There is more in it.

2 1/4 exhaust-i was going for quiet as this is dailly driver

plugs-not sure. i think normal copper plugs. will have to pull to see heat range.

carb is 2100 holley and according to dyno guy-I am a little rich but not terrible.

online calcs say I have more than double required airflow for over 4,000 rpm.
its automatic so i never see that high normally

i think the more to be had is in the cam and/or cam timing.
see previous posts about my luddite scardy-cat-ness....

Are your compression numbers corrected for altitude? And what altitude are you at?

update-getting ready to advance my stock renix cam.
baby steps. -going to advance it first 4` as i retarded it during build-scared of ping.

i have had ping when gas sat for more than 60 days-CA gas. i ONLY run 91 octane.

currently have over 7,000 miles-lots of heavy, HEAVY towing and/or HEAVY loads. 4,000# curb and usually between 1500-2500(measured) extra lb in the bed.
loaded car trailer towing often GCVW between 8-12,000# not uncommon.

will do dyno run after cam advance if no ping on driving.
may SLIGHTLY decrease jet size as FA ratio was between 11-13 during dyno run.

will do dyno run with measurements beginning at idle instead of 2500(user controlled readings)

dont expect results before end of summer-i am SLOW with projects as mortage needs payment.. blah blah.

Cam advance on Saturday. Then dyno
Next will be replacing carb with efi
Gonna be a ROYAL PITA since I have to turn throttle body 90 degrees so that the arm will move my required arm coming from my 727 Trans to control valve body pressure.
Also have to create a crank timing trigger as I have 727 flexplate and I'm NOT changing crank damper since it took 3 versions before my machinist could get one to actually balance.
Gonna have to creatively Rube Goldberg it.

First things first.

Also considering a custom cam as not at all thrilled with my off the shelf options.
I want all my power to be in all the way before I hit 3,000.
I don't race, I work.

So how did your numbers change after the cam adjustment? I checked out your blog, What did you end up doing with the panel van?
