Post by drummergus13 »

I am trying to build a stroker, preferably a 4.6L, but I have run into an issue finding a crank that doesn't cost $500+

If anybody has a crank they wouldn't mind getting rid of, I would gladly take it off of your hands! None of the junkyards around me, Craigslist, Facebook, KSL, etc. have one.

If I can't end up finding one, does anyone know of a decent build with a stock crank or 232 crank? The engine needs built and it's my daily driver.

There is so much knowledge and info on this forum that sometimes I can't even remember if I have found my answer yet or not, and browsing through history doesn't work with thousands of history pages... if you know what I mean!

Not trying to be a "give me your ideas so I can be lazy," I just have information overload and need to set it all straight.

thanks in advance for any help.

The 232 3.500 "Mini Stroker" should definitely be considered for a low-cost upgrade from a stock 4.0 build.

With a cast 2229 piston and not touching the deck of the block you'll be around a zero deck with a 4.0 rod with a static around 9.4:1 to 9.5:1ish

It's what I call "no excuse not to build a stroker" engine kit.

Feel free to shoot me an email if you would like to get a kit quote with a freshly ground 232 crank.

From my site:

If you all thought that the old AMC 232 I6 crankshafts were only destined for scrapheap oblivion, think again. There are plenty of them around and with a 3.500" stroke, you can use them to convert a stock 4.0L engine into a 4.2L mini-stroker. While it doesn't have the displacement of an AMC 258 crank-based stroker, the 258 cranks are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive so a mini-stroker offers a low cost alternative to more HP/TQ:

4.2L Milder mini-stroker

AMC 232 3.500" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Silvolite UEM-2229 +0.060" bore pistons
Increase piston dish volume to 24cc
8.8:1 CR
CompCams 68-115-4 192/200 degree camshaft
DIY ported HO 1.91"/1.50" 57cc cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket

Bosch 0280155703 injectors for '96-'04 engines

4.2L Wilder mini-stroker

AMC 232 3.500" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Silvolite UEM-2229 +0.060" bore pistons

When doing a search for a 232 crankshaft keep in mind you'll need to get the later crankshaft produced between 72-79 casting number 3214722. What differentiates this from the earlier crankshaft produced in the years between 64-71 is that the rear Crankshaft flange has a centering ring where is the early crank has a flat flange.

I currently have them in stock for anybody that is not able to obtain one. A clean maged and freshly ground crank will cost you $200.00 plus shipping.

Thanks,

Just curious, are the SCAT cranks easy to get, and how much do they run?

Not bad. Not much of a cost difference in the long run for 4.2 vs 4.6. Would you consider them worth the extra coin over a factory 258 crank?

I've never had any issues with the stock 258 crank.

I'd certainly love to sell new Scat Crankshaft's,
But in my opinion it ultimately becomes a price point and convenience factor. If and when I'm able to locate a 258 crank from my core supplier "My cost" is currently $144.00 which has doubled in the last five years. If anybody's paying more than that they need to factor in a mag and grind plus a $35.00 spacer if it has the long 2.500 snout. It can start adding up.

10 years ago the crank grinders were throwing them away. Can years from now companies like Scat maybe your only choice.

The good news is I'm hoping in a few months I'll have my new 12 counterweight Crankshaft's finished ready to ship.
I'll post pricing soon as I have it worked out.

Very cool! I look forward to seeing it!

So in reference to the Scat crank, sounds like not much benefit other than being new.
