Stock valve springs with Comp 231 cam?

Post by stroked'73 »

I've got the 231-4 cam and I'm using stock valve springs. It goes good, but I've got nothing to compare it to either. I'm going to take off the head (renix) and do a simple port/gasket match job. While I'm there I'm gonna replace the valve springs since the ones in there are the original ones and have 200K or so on them.
My question is what are the cons of getting stock springs? I've read here that they'll handle the .462/.485 lift of the cam, but will they wear out quick? Evidentely my rockers don't bind now, but what could happen with them too?

Anyone here reused their stock springs with a similar cam?

And if I need to get better springs, are the mopar ones the only game in town? How much more pressure do they have over the stock ones?

All comments/opinions appreciated!!

The mopar performance springs are suppossed to be 120# at 1.640. They have a 270# spring rate. So multiply 270 by your valve lift and add that to the 120# installed rate. .485x270=130.95 + 120=250.95 / .462x270=124.74 + 120=244.74. So at max lift your spring rates would be 250 and 245. I like the mopar valve springs. I wouldn't run anything else, well maybe a beehive spring, but they are expensive. The MP seat pressure is high enough to control the valves(keep them from bouncing off the seat), but the 270# spring rate won't kill a hydraulic cam. The spring rate of the springs that comp recommends is WAY to high...my opinion.

Also the MP springs install at the same height as the stock springs(1.640).

Ditto on the Comp recommended springs. The 926's are rated at 415lbs/in. Quite aggressive for mild flat tappet cams, especially with today's problematic oils.

Im running the comp-cams 231-4 on a 4.5L stroker.

for cam break-in i used the stock 4.0L valve springs, and after break-in i had a serious valve float after 4200RPM.
then i installed the mopar performance springs, and now my stroker is happy till the rev-limiter.

the stock springs are just to "soft" for that cam, I also agree that comp-cams recommended spring are too stiff.

That's good to know! The only reason I'm considering going stock springs is the price of the MP springs. My stroker is carbureted, so there's no rev limiter, but around 4,000 to 4,500 it runs out of power but still sounds good but I'm sorta scared to rev it up that high or higher - it screams but doesn't have the corresponding oomph that should go with it, maybe because that's what valve float is like?
I don't need to go that high but it would be nice sometimes - especially with a manual 3-speed.

What application do you use when ordering these mopar springs from a auto parts store? What needs to be done to the heads before you could run the LS beehive springs?

Then where did I get P4529215 for the springs? I have that noted on the springs that I should buy, but why are you listing P5249464?

P4529215's are stock 4.0 replacment springs. They are only good for .430 lift.

P5249464 is for the 5.2 magnum springs, you cant use stock springs over .430. these springs fit the seat and have a higher spring pressure to compensate your cams lift. they also have the same compressed height as stock Thanks RAPTORFAN85 for clearing that up lol

P4529218 are single groove style Valve Keepers. Can I use them on 3 groove Valves?

Those are mopar part numbers, so any place that sells mopar parts. Jeepconnection.com/mopartsracing.com are two mirror sites that sell those parts
