Oil Filter Adapter

Post by jsawduste »

After some 13 years my personal stroker started leaking a bit of oil.

Haven't built an engine for a while now and the available parts have changed a bit. One example was the rear main which is no longer available through my sources. Used Fel Pro as an alternative. Took a couple installs but got it tightened up good now.

The dist. gasket was weeping and OEM replacements are available. Quick and easy fix.

The hard part was the oil filter adapter. With the help from Russ he figured out what I was running. There is actually two different O-Ring sets. A Renix and an HO. The difference is the small O Ring on the hollow bolt.

Fel Pro ES 72962 is the Renix set
OEM 04720363 is the HO set

Again the difference is the small O Ring on the hollow bolt.

Getting to the point. The oil filter adapter has a 3/4x16 double male threaded nipple with a 1" socket hex on it. One end goes into the adapter and the other into the oil filter itself. Took that nipple out and screwed it right into the block where the hollow bolt used to be.

Went to the autoparts store and started going through filters. Found the Bosch 3300 to have the 3/4x16 thread and the gasket surface exactly the same size as the large O Ring from the adapter. The 3300 is a popular sized filter and several other brands cross to it. The filter itself is a bit smaller than the typical 4.0 filter but still larger than a LS replacement. I don't submit to size=efficiency so I am satisfied with the result.

So by screwing the 3/4x16 nipple into the block the filter now seats on the machined portion where the large O Ring used to go.

Doing this eliminated 2 90* turns the oil has to travel and the O Rings from the adapter.

No more oil leaks and maybe its my imagination but the OP gage seems to be reading a tad higher.

As you can see in the pictures there is plenty of room. Even with aftermarket engine mounts.

Only allowing one picture at a time. Have to figure out how to add multiples and be able to rotate them.
