Edelbrock head, 2000 intake, 1998 header question?

Post by nicpaige »

Well I have been suffering with an exhaust leak on my stroker since installed in my 2000XJ. I have the Edelbrock head (pre-99 exhaust ports) and 2000 HO intake with a Banks header for a 2000 XJ  . I realized recently that the header and cylinder head don't really match due to the port designs. This of course may be a solid cause for my exhaust leak or at least a restriction or blown out gasket. My question is, will a pre-99 style header and down pipe clear the HO intake and bolt up to the catalytic converter? Also what gasket would you recommend?

The late intake is compatible with the earlier header, it bolted right on my '97 TJ, the earlier header will require head pipe mods, they are not compatible.

The answer to your first question is yes, and you'll need an OEM combination intake/exhaust manifold gasket for the '91-'98 models.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will have a Banks header for a 2000 XJ for sale soon.

I thought the ports on most of not all aftermarket headers were all large enough to mate to the old style heads and that the only real difference was the outlet(s)?

Just copied this off Edelbrock site.
"The Performer Jeep 4.0L is designed with 1991-2006 4.0L intake port locations and must be used with 1991-2006 intake manifold. The Performer Jeep 4.0L is designed with 1991-98 4.0L exhaust port locations and must be used with 1991-98 factory header or aftermarket exhaust header."
Maybe their is hope. Thanks for bringing that up guys.

Okay follow up question. It looks as if when you buy a header it many times comes with a gasket. Is this gasket made especially for the size of the header tube openings or simply the same as a stock manifold gasket for that particular year head?

It depends on the header manufacture.
Some come with the court dimensions of a stock Fel-Pro replacement gasket, and some come larger.

I have a gasket company that specifically makes a gasket for me. It's a special material that has a wire center core with graphite composition outer. It's soft enough where I'll take a good bite but yet won't burn through.

I called Banks and they said to just pick up a stock gasket for a 98 XJ. So do you sell these gaskets Russ?
